ABC News Nightline Report: Bratz Vs. Barbie

Well, here we go again! Bratz versus Barbie, MGA Entertainment against Mattel. In this ABC News Nightline report, Isaac Larian, the CEO and President of MGA Entertainment (as well as the seemingly nice man who wants to pummel Barbie and pulverize Mattel), explains that he is in no way going to be intimidated by Mattel's consistent bullying of his Bratz dolls -- or his company, for that matter. He adds that he would go so far as to throw a party for Barbie's retirement. And wouldn't that be a nice thing? Of course, Mattel isn't going to allow Mr. Larian to retire Barbie anytime soon, as much as he would like to see her retired.

Bratz teach girls to be unique and that it's okay to have flaws and blemishes. For example, in their midnight dance collection, they were goths. And in another, they were glam and posh. I love bratz but barbie was by FAR better when it comes to diversity. Barbie has made Christie (barbie’s dark skin black friend) since the 60’s, and she was present in almost every line barbie was. Same with Nikki for the teen skipper lines. Barbie also released an african american version of every major barbie doll as well, like the movie dolls. Bratz on the other hand only had 1 dark skinned character, Felicia, and she’s now super rare due to her only being in a few lines. However bratz was also the first one’s to include latino and middle eastern dolls, i cannot remember there being a latino or middle eastern barbie doll.

@@wargattack8837 that’s not true. There were four dark skinned characters in Bratz: Sasha, Felicia, Destiny and Nevra. It seems like Barbie just wanted girls to stay in the kitchen or marry a man. Bratz was about women working and owning their own label, and also about expression through clothes, music and all kind of art. That was so powerful and visionary. However, nowadays Barbie has changed for good, for example, i love the presidencial collection that they launched this year where the president is an afro american woman :) but we cannot deny that Bratz were so ahead of their times in the early 2000s and Barbie was not.

Okay so no, this is just flat out wrong. Neither Sasha, Nevra or Destiny are dark skin’s. They’re at BEST lightskin, but they mostly just pass for white girls with dark hair and tans. Felicia is the only actual dark skin bratz doll. I absolutely love bratz, and how they Championed diversity in the way of making ALL the 4 major bratz the faces of the Brand, while barbie of course is the face of her own Brand, there’s still no denying that in the way of actual diversed representation within the doll lines, barbie wins by far. Christie dolls have been around for decades, and Christie is a an actual dark skin african american. Nikki (skipper’s best friend) is also a dark skinned african american, and same with stacie and kelly’s black friends. I honestly perosnally prefer bratz over barbie, but Even i can admit that barbie by far wins the diversity when it comes to number and amount of dark skinned dolls.

There are other bratz like Yasmin for example that is latina (brazilian) but not afro, and also Fianna, that is brazilian too. But Sasha is a black woman.

Okay, I just feel like I need to write something. IMO, Bratz and Barbie are both.amazing dolls, but I happen to find Bratz alot more interesting. Honestly, alot of people like to bash on the Bratz, because they wear alot of make-up and dressed in short clothing, so they didn't really think they were good role models for young girls. But what about their music? In alot of their songs and most times in the TV series, they talk about being yourself, never giving up and sticking together with your best friends. I think that the Bratz girls are amazing role models for anybody. And I really wish people could see that. --- I also find Barbie to be a good role model for anyone as well. She's like a mother to alot of the little girls out there, and she can be pretty inspiring as well, with the "I can be..." lines. I don't have too much to say about Barbie because she dosn't get "messed with" nearly as much as Bratz do IMO. So that's pretty much it, I just felt like I needed to express somethings that were bugging me. I relate to this, I am 17 years old and I still remember how MUCH I was obsessed with the Bratz dolls when I was younger and how much I gravitated towards them so easily because they seemed like actual people, they were hard working and worked for their dream jobs and would help each other, their other friends and other people out. They always talked about being honest with yourself and each Bratz character had different characteristics that as a whole unit, could prove very inspiring to young girls, such as myself, that it truly was.

Bratz always caught my eye, I never was interested in Barbie. Barbie is the perfect example how not to look like. They have very thin legs and thin arms, a body you shouldn't let a child want to give. And it's nothing more but pink for Barbie, while the Bratz have a variation of styles and colors. It’s so sad that they have to be in a feud. The interviewer is so biased. My Scene really looked like Bratz dolls! Mattel won (only in sales FOR NOW, MGA technically won the lawsuit) because they’ve been here for a long time, but that doesn’t mean that they have no fault. I will always love Bratz more, but I like Barbie too. They were ahead of their time, they were so fashionable and they really taught us to express ourselves and be unique. Barbie has chosen to be a bit more diverse now, but Bratz really brought diversity in the doll industry and celebrated it. Bratz taught me to be different, and they will always be an icon. They’re coming back this Fall of 2018 and I’m really excited and wish them success because they deserve it!

i know this interview was over a decade ago but now i’m a lot older i have a much more of a better stand point and understanding. when i was little, i never really liked barbie because i saw them as boring and too basic. i was more interested in bratz and monster high because of how different each character was and how each one had a different story as well as promoting to young children to be themselves and embrace who you are, not going around and partying while acting like a whore. why were parents more concerned two decades ago about what their children decided to play with when it came to dolls than parents now not giving a single shit about their 6-12 year old children being on social media websites like snapchat, tik tok, and instagram were all these “influencers” are influencing their young audience to go out and only care about boys, using substances and having sex at a young age, throwing it back to inappropriate music for child predators to look at, and dressing way worse than the bratz dolls ever did? it’s crazy to me how society has changed so much in over two decades with children and parenting because if bratz were released now in 2020, no one would give a single fuck and would let it slide.

Barbie Vs BRATZ. My reasons for being on Team BRATZ 1. Representation. Barbie: In simple terms Barbie represents nothing more then a dream world where things will work out for you if your pencil thin and got bright blonde hair. Bratz: is a representation of reality where there is no perfection but your beautiful if you are who you are. 2. Ideal Boyfriend. Barbie: (Ken) is a stalker level clinger that I couldn't see with anyone. He is supposed to represent Mattel's ideal of the "Perfect" boyfriend. News flash: No such thing as perfection. Besides who wants a creepy stalker for a boyfriend? HELL NO! Bratz (Cameron) Respects boundaries, has a crush on Cloe in the tv series, but doesn't stalk her. He knows that a girlfriend needs their space and so does he. Each individual in a relationship needs space. Do not suffocate them or you'll ruin it for yourself. 3. Each Bratz character has their own personality and the character development shows. Each of them have their own way of expressing themselves. Barbie has an idea of how people should look. She's shallow, superficial just annoying in general. 4. The Bratz are about empowerment and Freedom of expression. They express themselves in their style and fashion. Their friendship has it's ups and down just like any other but at the end of the day they're inseparable. These are the girls with " a passion for fashion." Barbie: Yeah sure Barbie only inspires a perfect life style that is unattainable, and that with great looks you can get anything you want and the world will give it all to you. Bratz was so detailed so many accessories and options in a pack. Like the cars and play sets used real material and realistic details the cars looked real! The accessories looked real. Barbies houses and cars and other play sete were plastic junk. In the 80s and 90s she had more detail but after the 2000s she started to go cheap now that’s happening to the Bratz. Lots of toys/dolls don’t want to take risks so they take the easy way out for the cheap formula of ‘girls’ toys covering everything in 2016 bright colours with #s and ‘selfies’ and very outdated things. Bratz now look so bad they still have a bit of detail left but they lost their glamour. I just bought a 2018 collectors Bratz dolls and I can’t wait for it to arrive because that collection is the only recent series that sticks to the source material and doesn’t make everything cheap

I like Barbies more than Bratz. But I think Barbies were starting to suck since 2005 and trying to gain their comeback around this year with more diversity, make them more articulated and create something new with Barbies. So that's a good thing about Barbie. I remember when I was a kid, Barbies and Bratz always competing each other on selling and the court house. Bratz got canceled around 2008/09, but came back around this year. I have to say, Bratz look better than Barbie these days even though I like Barbie more.

@Daisy Hort I apologize that I didn't get back to you. Believe me or not, I really don't comment stuff on youtube no more. It's been a really long time since I did that. Anyway, but I do agree with you that Barbie is still holding strong, in the wrong way. Those color reveal Barbies look very terrible and cheap. I do like those Barbie Extra dolls, but I think some of them in series 2 are starting to look awful. Especially, the new upcoming ones for series three. I know they are copying MGA dolls and it makes even more sad that Barbie just fall apart. The Barbie designers and the executives at the Barbie department are not creative no more and loosing ideas. From a 5 year old comment that I made, I still feel the same way, but I'm stating to feel disappointed.

everything that we do affects us on some level. Our mind isn't a filter, we have no choice but to take in everything we experience. Girls growing up may not dress like this, but since they've been exposed to it they won't think to much of being a bad thing. It's just like how adults will say don't curse infront of children.
