When I was a cop in California, I used to cite illegal handicapped space parkers as often as I could. The fine was $408.00. Most of the violators said "I was only there for a minute." I'd then point out "that space is free, that space there is free, that space there is free. Why would you pick the only space that costs $408.00? It doesn't make sense." Others would say "if a handicapped person wanted to park in the space I was in, I would move my car and let them park there." I said "They are not going to ask you if you aren't there to move it." I had little sympathy for the violators of handicapped spaces.
@auntiem8735 жыл бұрын
Scoop43 - I love/hate that response. It implies they were sitting in the car the whole time instead of shopping (the reason why they went there in the first place). I would respond with “So you know what you were doing was wrong and you chose to do it anyway! I wish I could make the fine higher.” Or “I’ll let the Court know that you knew what you were doing...” I can just see that one person trying to report me on how I said that I wish the fine could be higher for parking in a handicapped space without a placard. That person trying to hold back laughter.

Ever have a case where someone parked in the handicap space but ended up doing so because they were giving someone a ride after they had say broken a leg. Don't want to give the wrong impression. Not accusing here just curious.
@auntiem8735 жыл бұрын
olstar18 - I had 2 legs in a cast and the doctor would not give me a temporary parking placard. Having a broken leg is an inconvenience but not a handicap. If your doctor feels it will be too much for you body to handle then they can get you a temporary placard, if you ask. I also feel that just because you are a certain age (65+) does not entitle you to park in those spots. Old age is also not a disability. My husband cracked 3 vertebrae 20 years ago. They never healed, essential a broken back. Last year the doctor finally thought it was now time to give him a disabled placard. So a broken leg taking that spot without that card pisses me off.

bigbank hank - I don’t think so. The cops not being around to give them a ticket would make more sense. Why isn’t. Cop around when you need them attitude. I would be very happy to see a person without the proper tag or placard getting a ticket. I would like that cop.

@@guitarsrcool4922 Agree. Can’t tell you the number of people I see parking in HC spots with placards or license almost running into the stores. If their handicapped, I’m a horse. I used to work as an Armed Guard at a Walgreens years ago. And people used to constantly park in the handicap ♿ space in front of the store. It used to tick me off so much!! I've been working at my home depot for going on 8 years now and this nice lady with cerebral palsy had been coming in since before I worked there. She actually looked quite healthy but the moment she'd get up to reach something on a higher shelf you could see from how her legs would shake that there's no way she could get around without her scooter. Well probably 3 years ago or so I was working as assistant manager and a customer came up to me telling me that this guy was following this lady in a scooter around saying she's a fake and as I'm going around looking for them I see this in a checkout lane bumping his car into something and I walk up and he's bumping his cart into the back of this ladies scooter. There's a lane completely open right next to her so I tell him he can take that empty lane and he said "nah i'm good" so I'm just straight up with him and told him I was informed that he had been following her around and if he didn't stop harassing her he would have to leave. I didn't even need to tell him to leave, he just got pissy and started to walk out and as he got to the door he just ran out screaming and I see him running up to a truck being towed...it turns out an employee collecting shopping carts saw a guy park in a handicap spot without putting up his handicap sticker and radioed into the manager who then called a parking lot security guard who ticketed him $400 for parking in a handicap spot and then called a tow truck after it not moving for 15 minutes.

So, if you used someone else's placard to park in a handicapped spot, you'd be looking at nearly $1800 in fines. Personally, I wouldn't mind if they towed the cars on the first offense, just to make it really hurt and get the message through that wrongly parking in a handicapped spot and paying a fine if caught, isn't just the cost of doing business. Tow the car on the first offense. Possibly even revoke their driver's license.

The increased rate for commercial vehicles is a damned good idea. I've seen videos of how commercial vehicles will park any ole place in San Fran and get incredible numbers of tickets, because the companies just see it as the cost of doing business and drivers know that their companies will pay the fines for them. In truth though, maybe if companies really are parking like this and racking up fines like crazy (not just handicapped spot fines), there might be a larger issue around the lack of parking for commercial vehicles for businesses/drivers who really are just trying to do their work and earn a living. But honestly, I don't know what the solution would be.

My deceased mother who was 82 in her last year, used a walker, and oxygen. She had four artificial joints to include two knees. One time I took her shopping and all the handicapped spots were taken including a couple with no handicapped license plate or hang tag! We had to walk quite a distance to get to the store and my poor mother who had COPD really bad asked me to take her home without ever entering the building! She was so exhausted from the long walk that she could not continue! Cops here in south Florida never do anything about people parking in spots that are reserved for disabled people and also parking in fire lanes or not even bothering to get off the road. I saw a person the other day, park their car in front of a store in the road and walk into the store blocking traffic!

As a disabled person it's nice to have these spots but I hardly use them but those that are not disabled and take these spots should go in front of a federal judge cause it's a federal law that makes these spots open and get heaver fines due to them being stupid

I deal with this at least 3 times a week here in Baltimore County Maryland. Enforcement is none existent from my experience. The fine needs to be raised to $1000.00 and enforced. BALTIMORE COUNTY ARE YOU LISTENING????????????????????????
@WildlifeObsessed5 жыл бұрын
A ‘fine’ of whatever size doesn’t work. The abuser is taking advantage of a Handicapped Person, so ........ - Automatic impound of vehicle for a week. - Abuser has to spend that week in a handicapped People’s Home/Hostel, so that they can learn, who they are taking from. - On completion of that week (forgot to say - unpaid), they can Claim their vehicle on payment of $1,000 fine in full. Cash or Bearer Bonds only. - Name and Photo published in Local Paper. That ought to have an affect.

As a handicapped person myself, but able to use a walker, I do not use spaces marked VAN ACCESSIBLE. Wheelchair ramps need ten feet of space beyond the van’s door. People not having handicapped permits should pay an additional fine for parking in those designated spaces. Van accessible spaces are wider than the regular handicapped spaces.

I don't have a handicap placard and I'm in good health. When I park I usually park far away just in case seniors or people with small children need close spots. Just how I was raised.

Each time I buy a new car, I park as far away as possible in the nether regions of the parking lot. Unfortunately there are people who park next to me, even though there are plenty of parking spaces available closer to the store.

My Radiology Oncologist offered me a handicapped parking permit. I declined - for now. For as long as possible I prefer to leave those rare spaces for people that need it more than me. For now the side effects of my inop brain tumor are not obvious to others. A guy at a grocery store was harassing a lady parked in a Handicapped space, he couldn't 'see' any issues. The lady was near my age (early 70s), and was terrified. Being fairly fearless I intervened and said 'it's a good thing her Dr can diagnose emphysema without having to see it'. (I don't know if she had emphysema but it was the first diagnosis that occurred to me.) I helped the lady into her wheelchair and he continued to rant. I called 911 and reported Elder Abuse on a handicapped lady as we entered the store. He followed us in the store. Store Security intervened just as a Police car arrived. He actually had a knife in his pocket! He pulled the knife on Security so he was arrested. It's a shame people will not mind their own business.

It doesn't matter if it's about the ticket quota because in cases like this, it is completely justifiable and extremely over due. I wish every state would adopt this program, I'd be first in line to apply for this job if it were in my state and city lol.

Since the there is an increase in accessible parking spot violators increase the fine. For a first time offense the fine would be $1,000 minimum and a wheel clamp placed on the vehicle so they have to pay the fine.

Is it just me or does the seal on the parking enforcement Officers coat from a distance look like it’s flipping the bird?
@scoop43215 жыл бұрын
One thing I would like to tell people about Disabled Parking enforcement is that the space must be properly marked before it can be enforced. That means it must have the Disabled logo on the asphalt of the parking space, and it must have an upright sign with the Disabled logo on it clearly visible to the driver of the parked vehicle. If the lines or logo of the space are worn, it not not enforceable.
@terryburns18052 жыл бұрын
Well, if the Police can't enforce it I can, by awarding that person (as I have in the past) four deflated tires. Happy motoring!

I have a side entry van and use a powered wheelchair - after way too many instances of people parking in the hashed out area intended for deployment of the ramp, if I had to damage their vehicle in order to get in, I’d do that. I’m not going wait around, and hope they’re coming back soon. I’ve scratched, creased, and dented doors, I’ve deployed the ramp into the sides of their vehicles, and in instances where there’s no possible way for me to get in whatsoever, I just wait to have a friendly discussion with them. I’ll never understand what goes through the mind of a person who thinks it makes sense to park in a disabled spot when they don’t need it.

I go to LA Fitness. There are a few handicapped parking spaces in front of LA Fitness. I actually saw eat Rolls Royce park there and the guy was bench pressing 200 pounds. I often see really expensive cars park there and people are on the treadmill doing fast jogging at a pace of 4 miles per hour. These people seem to have handicapped tags in their cars. But they cannot be for them

@CitizenPerkins5 жыл бұрын
The next step is to ticket "Handicapped Parking placard users" that aren't the actual placard owner. In other words, if the placard belongs to your mom and she's NOT in the car with you, you DON'T get to park in the handicapped spot. There are too many able-bodied people using placards when they're not assisting a placard owner.
@justhere47215 жыл бұрын
Yes, dont park in the handicapped space if you dont have a tag. But on a side note, I noticed there's a lot more people with these tags that dont need any assistance getting around. They dont have chairs, walkers, crutches, canes nothing. I'll say about 90% of the ones I see using tags dont seem to need it. Not sure whats the criteria to get these tags, but it doesnt seem like much.

62 dislikes? You better stay out of my spot. I will park behind you and you will leave when I'M ready. That's street justice. Cops don't always make the less mobile people a priority. Even I've made cops move.

In Ontario, Canada one can be fined up to $5,000 dollars for illegally parking in a disabled spot. That keeps the deviants in check.

My hat is off to this city worker. My favorite part was when he said, "You can contest my tickets, I'll even tell you how to contest my ticket." This basically means, I am right. You are wrong and lets see who wins.
@chaoticconjuring3 жыл бұрын
I wish that states would severely increase those fines. If people were getting $2000 fines for parking illegally in handicap spots then they would be far less likely to do it.
