Rumple lost his only son. He became the dark one to protect him. Then he lost him after backing out on a deal. A grave punishment that not even the dark one can avoid. It took him a lot of dark deeds to get back to Baelfire. He may not have cast the curse. But he set the pieces in motion and did kill dozens of people anyway. He embraced the darkness but still loved his son which he used to justify everything he did.

+Chozen123 For me, Merlin gave us the answer: "Killing is the dark path". If you remember, in season 1, when Rumple became the Dark One, he didn't get the skin until he killed a lot of people as the Dark One. The "crocodile skin" is like a "sinful mark", which becomes stronger according to the Dark One's path into the Darkness. Similar to green skin for Zelena: she turned entirely green only after she completely surrendered herself to Envy. As Dark One, Emma hasn't killed anyone yet so she hasn't gotten the skin yet. And I guess something is related to hatred: the first murders did by Rumple were "common murders", "light revenges". Nimue, by her turn, killed her family's murderer, and with so much hatred that she completed the path to the Darkness with one step.

Either Nimue was letting her think she was in control by giving up the spark and doing as she was told but still controlling her, or the editors made a mistake and spliced the wrong footage together.

Nimue was a Faerie Goddess according to Legend who taught Merlin sorcery. Later Geoffrey of Monmoth perverted the legend to say she was a woman Merlin loved who hated him and only wanted his powers. Other stories say that she did love him but was obsessive with him. In fact a bunch of stories claim he had many lovers. He was quite the ladies man for a crazy wild Shaman living in the Forrest and talking to animals and spirits. Nimue was also the bad guy in the Merlin series from England in the original season. Although she was more misunderstood and she didn't really care about Merlin at all. They didn't even really know each other.
