Atlanta successfully shut down Freaknik ... just flood the street with State Troopers, cops, traffic stops and put up barricades, or checkpoints, at any roadway access to South Beach. That's what we did in Atlanta, and the popularity faded because Atlanta practically became inaccessible for partygoers during that timeframe.

I remember when Freaknik party goers would shut down I75, I85, and I20 with their foolish behavior causing safety issues. Imagine 3 major interstates being shut down because people were partying on them! The first year we moved to the area, no one told us about Freaknik - I was stuck in traffic for 4 hours.

Reminds me of Freaknik in Atlanta in the late 80s, early 90s. The crowds were too big, the venues and nightspots were overrun with tons more non-paying onlookers than patrons, the police were overwhelmed with calls - many serious - but were unable to get to crimes in progress due to traffic jams. There were shootings, rapes, and murders. Intersections all over town came to a stop because of the thousands of cars just cruising around. The residents fumed because of damages to their property and to shopping centers. Eventually the city shut it all down, it had to happen. Miami may have to do so as well.

Fort Lauderdale used to be the place for spring break. Everyone went there. Then the city decided they didn't want young kids drinking alcohol late into the night and acting stupid so they did everything possible to drive the kids out. What used to be thriving hotels all along the beach are being converted to condos that serve as beach cabanas for rich guys who have larger houses away from the beach. All the bars, restaurants, and beach toy rental places went out of business. The place generates less than ten percent of the jobs they had there before.

Why surreal? Spring break has gradually come to include, even encourage extreme and dangerous behavior. It’s not as if it couldn’t be seen coming.

The bar owner who says he doesn't make any money during spring break. OK then, close your shop, board up your windows and take a week vacation during spring break. Enough of you enablers do that, then spring breakers will go elsewhere and normal tourists (whom you profit from) will return. Or were you lying and trying to shift blame?

They’re insane. You can’t get rid of spring breakers. You have to shut down parties, venues, events, etc from advertising their business in promoting Spring Break. Let’s be real the whole city and surrounding areas are making a lot of money. Probably millions of dollars bring pumped into those areas. It’s a form of tourism and tourism thrives in hot places like Miami. Imagine if spring break is shut down there. I hope they do and then we’ll see how much revenue they lost. Maybe they’ll find a way. I’m sorry those folks got killed. They need to do better policing such as offering money to residents if they know BS is going down and do a preventative protection measure before those massive spring breakers arrive.

They are not making money on spring break it is just a lot of people walking around. The Mayor of Miami has said they do not want spring break. What they have done is run away the real customers who would normally be down there and decided not to for safety reasons.

They aren't making MILLIONS, u are misinformed HEAVILY. BUSINESSES lose money during spring break, due to the Violence and Shootings that have have been taking place. Spring break needs to be SHUT DOWN, and OTHER alternatives will be put in place to generate money. The party is OVER bro, it's gotten out of hand.

I see your point and it would be almost impossible to stop spring break, maybe they could require an actual student ID to rent a room to anyone under 30 in Miami during spring break I kinda think that would eliminate half of them.
