I couldn't more agree. It's such a big ignorance for a very sensitive subject. I mean, we know that it's a fiction and to be honest I enjoyed watching it for its artistic visual and musical but somehow it felt so wrong because the reality is way so much worse. Many people died in Mexico because of these cartels but sadly they chose to glorify the personal subject of the cartel leader because its "trans representation" that forces us to forgive the horrible crimes she (he) committed before. I haven't seen Emilia Perez, but I imagine it must not be very good, given the reception. I have seen The Substance, Dune Part Two, and A Complete Unknown, and honestly, Coralie Fargeat does a lot in The Substance that is worthy of the nomination. Love it or hate it, The Substance has a lot of marks of good direction, interesting choices and bold risks. James Mangold in The Complete Unknown doesn't do anything very creative, as a work of direction, it's not particularly innovative. So if you want to take someone out to put in Villeneuve, who I definitely think should be there, I would take out Mangold, and, even though I haven't seen it, Emilia Perez, but certainly not Fargeat.
