The legendary Dinosaur Jr. bassist on life with and without J Mascis.

Very impressed. My stupid presumption: I judged the presenter / interviewer on his initial appearance and thought this would be a typical after school-special view of "punk rock" or something. At the end, I really related to the guy - he asked the questions I would have asked (and that I've NEVER seen asked of Lou before). He acknowledged the greatness of Sebadoh and Lou's songwriting. Dinosaur Jr. / J are epic, but it's nice to see a feature on Lou for once. Thank you for creating / posting this.

Spot on what you said. Totally agree. It was good for Lou Barlow to be able to answer those questions.

Sebadoh slept in our living room, when they played a show in the early 90s. Lou Barlow is one of the nicest, coolest people I've ever met!

@Scott Davis ... Holy Sh*t!!! That is awesome! I know u posted this 2 yrs ago, but it's still effing rad! And you are right, he is the nicest dude... At a SebadoH in Buffalo last year, he worked his own merch table, hung out, took pics with fans... I can truly say his music makes my life better. There is just so much good shit!✌

Love Lou to bits. Saw him in many incarnations but never with Dino J, will make an effort the next time. How many artists would sit 2 feet in front of you, and give you so many stories and whatever songs you want to hear for 2 hours for under a tenner? He is my all time fave, and true Indie Rock Royalty.
@pjsebadoh54125 жыл бұрын
@Al Mack ... F*ck YEAH Mr. Mack! I saw him in Connecticut at an art studio, in front of about 50 people, $15 bucks, front row, just Barlow and a Ukulele. It ...was ...perfect.

Lou was so honest in answering these questions. You can see he has evolved as a person and is totally capable of humbling himself. I really like J Mascis but I can imagine he may be hard to deal with in ways (I could be totally wrong here). I respected Lou's honesty in this interview. Brand New Love is a beautiful song. Still one of my favourites (just had to add that here).

It is one of those things, like Pink Floyd wasn't really Pink Floyd without Roger, David, Richard, Nick. Dinosaur Jr, is J, Lou and Murph. But Lou with his relentless bass strumming, nothing could take the place of it. And no one was able to in the nineties.

Barlow is incredibly concise about what were obviously emotionally charged events. I'm glad he valued creating and sharing music over his pride. I'm impressed that he understood Jay is a jerk but that together they can still create wonderful music.

Lou is magnificence and a wicked guitar player. I will always treasure his music. I especially love those early Folk Implosion records. His chemistry with John Davis and Eric Gaffney are my particular favorites. I wish he would do something with Ash Bowie.

It is said never meet your heroes as you may be disillusioned but Lou seems a 'diamond geezer' (great fella) and pity about the friction with Jay, but let's face it the end results are amazing and his two songs are my my favourites on 'I bet on sky'.

Selfishly I love that Dinosaur and Sebadoh have so much of my favourite music, but it makes me a little bit sad that Lou and J seem to be really not friends at all. That's how it comes across to me, an obvious outsider. I hope their relationship is closer than it comes across. The music they create together is a god send.

have to give it to this journalist for having a genuine interest & appreciation is the subject of his story, J seems happier these days, I thought it was all around, including with Lou- the way you relate to people seems to be lasting, yes you grow you may learn more of the person, even appreciate them more...it doesn't mean you will be on the same wavelength-they obviously are on the same wavelength making music. it's kind of a drag seeing Lou anxious tho, it's noticeable & J seeming annoyed

I think during the most part of the 90's, Sebadoh's music was much superior to Dinosaur Jr's. I found it hard to sit through anything after Greenmind. However, J's recent solo albums (several shades, tied to a star) are exceptionally good. I gotta hand it to him, he still able to surprise everyone after 2-3 decades.

I'm almost as confused about this being on ABC as I am about the Craig ferguson show clip saying its the bands first tv performance ever.....he probably means that line up?
@HumGuitar6 жыл бұрын
Yes, he has to be talking about 1st time for the original line up. Dinosaur Jr was on Letterman a few times before that, but with a different line up. I think the first time they were on Letterman was for the Green Mind tour and they played The Wagon. I could be wrong, so if someone knows more, feel free to correct me.

@marmcd20039 жыл бұрын
You watch him in interviews? He's antisocial and kinda douchey he's probably borderline autistic.
@Meddled9 жыл бұрын
Marcus McDonald I wouldn't suggest borderline. The monotone voice and introspective delivery would indicate he is somewhere on the AS. His unwavering vision for the band, need for total control (which suggests he isn't exactly empathetic towards Lou or Murph), his tendency to hide behind his hair and his quirky guitar setup would suggest AS as well. It seems almost odd that he can create such sweet, heartfelt songs, but it seems at odds with the rest of his personality rather than being an extension of it. I'm no psychologist though, so don't weight too heavily on anything I say!
@HitmanJenkins17 жыл бұрын
@Lanko Lanko as someone who is on the autistic spectrum I can relate to J in so many ways, and to be honest given the traits that he shows it wouldn't surprise me that he's actually on the spectrum himself.
@hinder576 жыл бұрын
Since 1992 all the way until 2017 I've encountered and been with J privately and publicly. Even once at dinner beside the band and an interview and just casually... J has moods like all of us but like Lou says he processes them differently and has experienced quite a bit like all of us have... I would never say that he was arrogant or egotistical but yet a very different soul, and one still hi in the Spectrum or at least on my list as one of the greatest guitarist in history, should you ever get a chance to speak to J I would just say hello and thank you, it's sometimes when he's given too many words or words all jumbled up or too fast it's when it seems that it's too much to be given to him at once. But that's my $0.02. *( still my favorite band since 1988!)
@pamcm10985 жыл бұрын
@@hinder57 "Hello and thank you" was exactly what I said when I saw J across the street from CBGB after J played one of the last shows there. He was standing with two guitar cases waiting for a cab. We offered to help him with his guitars, but that wasn't happening. He seemed friendly enough though, and the solo show blew us away.
