Bring back the 33 cents a schooner BLOODY OUTSTANDING 🍺🇦🇺👍

This is outside the Tilbury Hotel in Wooloomooloo. Glimpses of the Finger Wharf can be seen in the background. There were many wharfies and tradesmen from the nearby wharves and Naval Dockyards rehydrating after a hard day's work. As a 10 -11-year-old paperboy, I used to sell newspapers in the four pubs in the area in 1972-73 (Dockyard, pubs, the roadway, home deliveries. The drunks used to help me sell my papers in the pub to the rowdy patrons. They didn't spare the tips neither. In 1973 I got around $5 in tips per day and $15 from commission per week from paper/magazine sales working seven days {4 hrs morning and 4 hrs afternoon). $50 earnings per week back then is equivalent to $500, factoring in inflation. Not bad earnings, but I was ripped off, seeing that I worked 56 hrs for it. My brother earned similarly

Great historical comment Robert. Love to read comments like yours. You were selling papers when l was born mate. When l was in my teens, l use to do the local paper and catalog rounds while my mate sold the newspaper down the local pub. It was a great time.

Fascinating. As a 36yr old bloke in the UK in 2022 I can say that we wouldn't have any issues relating with these guys. Imagine explaining today's hyperinflation to them and how the cost of living is extortionate all the while sinking as many pints as you can!

I started to go to the pub in 1975, it was a great way of life, beer was cheap, i remember it going up from 27 cents, to 33 cents a schooner, you could go to the pub with $2 and drink 6 schooners here on the south coast nsw, the best i can get a schooner for is $5.90 but the average in the clubs is $7.20 with a members discount, the greedy government puts the price up on beer every six months, what a bloody disgrace

I arrived in Oz in 89...a schooner was 1.70 to 1.90 fast forward 32 years you’re looking at $7-10...these blokes really didn’t know how lucky they were...and old Mr Cigarettes...he’d have been paying about 60c a packet of 20s for a decent Australian grown and made cigarette...nowadays 2021 +35 a pack and rising 12% every 6 months for the foreseeable future. Let’s do some math : 1975 10 schooners and 10 smokes = 3.30 + 30 = 3.60 2021 10 schooners and 10 smokes = 80.00 + 17.50 = 97.50 SORRY BOYS...YOU REALLY DON’T NO HOW LUCKY YOU ARE !!

That is the Tilbury Hotel at Woolloomooloo. You can see Finger Wharf in the background. Its now some of Sydney's most expensive real estate and restraunts. By '75 the area was in decline as a working dock, but there was still industry in the area and working class people. They are pretty much both gone now. The pub still exists as a bit of a gastro-pub, kind of please these blokes wouldn't be seen dead in.

the cost of grog in our beautiful drunk soked country is to high just to wet the whistle . i payed $50 bux for a sixer of jim beam can's this year in Newcastle i nearly fell over in shoke, and dont get me started about happy hourdo you know just how much they make in that short time its ridiculous. they take advantage of the hard working ozzy puting pubs on just about every corner. at first they sell it cheaply then once they have a hold on you they put the prices up, who do you think payed for most of the sport we watch, back in the mid 80's. wich wasnt a good look for sport so they stoped getting sponsorship for it and they had to withdraw all alcohol payed events, witch didnt go down well with the alcohol drinker's.
