This song puts into words when you see your childhood fading away as you try to piece together the memories that remind you of the innocence and joy of being a kid. Granted in the middle of the good, there are hard memories that we so want to distance ourselves from and yet we still long for the “good old days.” It’s ironic how as kids we desire to grow up so fast and yet when older, we wish it would all just slow down. In the process we lose the dreams and wonders we had as a child. As an an adult we trying to rekindle those dreams and recover those memories in the process. Recently saw videos of myself as a baby and I couldn’t help but tear up. I looked at myself, seeing a person who had no idea what was in store for them. It’s so easy to focus on the hardships, especially when so many have left wakes of pain. This puts it into words for me: “The shadows of the demons of yesteryear that once loomed over us still remind the troubled of their scars where weapons of destruction plunged deep into the body, mind, and soul.” Despite it all, the good memories make life worth it and provide a greater sense of appreciation for the good that occurs on a daily basis! I wrote this poem after reflecting on the journey of my life, along with finally reaching a better place with my health while dealing with Crohn’s disease: “Life is like a tree. The trunk is the present, sturdy, and known, ready to seek new heights, while learning on the way. The branches are the future, reaching out in many directions, full of potential and budding with growth. The roots are the past, just as exponential as the last, no longer in sight but recalled in remembrance of what is to come: new life.”

I joined the military to go to colledge and it sent me across the country 20 hours from my family and so much has changed in 3 years I have siblings I’ve only met 4 times and they are selling my childhood home and my dogs are dying and my grandparents are getting old and all my friends and cousins are having kids and getting married too much is changing and I just wish I could freeze time in that one place forever so I wouldn’t have to miss so much sometimes I wish I hadn’t gone back so my perception of that place wouldn’t have changed because I still thought of life back home as being the same as it always had been but it’s not and it’s never going to be again and I can’t do anything about it

I know that I’m growing and changing and having all new experiences I wouldn’t have had if I stayed in that place and time but that doesn’t mean I don’t long for it and regret not savoring it as much as I did when I had the chance to because when I was back there and young all I wanted to do was grow up but now I’m grown and I just want everything to slow down or stop but life keeps moving forward no matter how much I don’t want it to I’m 22 now, I’ve had two birthdays in quarantine and spent 4 years away from my family already but that doesn’t make it any less hard to see things moving on without me regardless of how I’m moving on without them
