Saw on another video comment somewhere that it was supposedly meant to increase efficiency. But they stopped doing it to eliminate the risk of people tripping or stumbling because it hadn't fully leveled yet.

Did you ever ride the Old Abell Before it Failed inspection

The Abell elevator failed inspection back in 1999, because one of the interlocks was broken. That meant the door could be opened while the cab was elsewhere, and someone could've fallen down the shaft. That could've resulted in a serious injury or death. I read a comment once that it was never fixed because it wouldn't have made financial sense for the university to do it. More than likely, it's been modernized by now.

@dieselducy Yep. This elevator made me realize: (1) People close to my age do this stuff (found those much older than me, as well). (2) Got me started, but before I had a game plan, did the YT's first ever "Man-Powered Elevator" video. (Look what I started, as if you didn't know.)

I thought they could have just replaced the entire door interlock and keep that elevator working, if you are saying that is the only elevator in the building then there has to be an issue with the ADA legislation in the US, which could force them tro bring that lift back into operatioon as if one or both of the other lifts, if there are two did fail then a lack of disabled access could provide a legality issue for the building owners which I think could cost them mroe than a simple lock.

Josh the Abell got shut down because they never fixed it and I read a comment and Andrew was saying they didn't have the money to get the part. It failed inspection in 1999. And unfortunately this elevator has been modernized and looks like the east elevator according to a comment I read on the video of the east video.
