Photos from the former US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. Photos taken in 2003. All photos taken by me except the black & white one and where otherwise noted. Please contact me regarding use of the photos.
Vehicles pictured include Panther, Tiger tank destroyer, M1 Abrams, SU-100, Marder and many others. World of Tanks fans will hopefully enjoy this.
I last visited APG in March 2016 and I think all these vehicles are gone now.

Pac1fic0 gnikcuF sad to see this .....Its contemptuous these historical vehicles etc open to elements....instead of the smithsonian maybe or other.....many collectors would cherish these important artifacts from historical wars..!Theyre hoping they can receive funding for a indoor museum....surely the massive defence spending, we could put some towards a building for these vehicles etc although it would have to be rather large.....preserve them for posterity in a world slowly trying to get rid of the past and a new age requires a clean slate this is from the Elites who control America and the world and a world war three they can't wait to spring upon us like the other two wars precipitated by them and get bring the world to a population of half million on the Georgia guide stones to wipeout us proles....I won't be around for this but God help my children

They're not really in any danger sitting out in open air. The steel used to make many of the tanks would take a super long time to deteriorate to an unfixable level. All they get is a bit of surface rust that can easily be scraped off if they ever repaint them.

They were moved to a different location and restored. These are displayed inside now. The Elefant just went to England as an exhibit in the Bovington museum. They once were inside early on but as funding for the museum waned they moved the lot outside without covering the open side view panels. I believe the Panther G was sent to Germany to be restored to running order.

Back late 80's was doing an NCO course at Aberdeen, part of that was ferrying fire watch privates to the museum and training areas on nights and weekends. Had to do rounds to check on them every few hrs, more than a few nights I would get inside alot of the tanks there, top hatches are locked or welded on most of them but there are Escape hatches that are open. They used to have a t-34 there that was hit with a 88MM round from a tiger right in front, obviously it went right through the front but the impressive part of it is the gun breach of that t-34 was actually bent almost on a 90 degree angle from the shell hitting it.. I imagine the crew inside the tank was probably turned to mush.

I remember going through the display at Aberdeen back in the late 1960's and a lot of them were rusty relics back then. It was interesting to see how shells had carved deep groves in the metal where they were hit by rounds. Quite a display back then plus I remember there was a building full of small arms that you could go through. We lived down the Bay a few miles in Carpenters Pt and had dogs and they were constantly freaked out by the explosions coming from Aberdeen back then.

i visited APG ordnance and armor museums before the base was closed to visitors. Each year there would be an open house with weapons demo's that were simply awesome. The tank museum had quite a few tanks, German tanks specifically, with battle damage. I recall some of them with multiple direct hits that gouged out or spalled off big chunks of metal but had not breached the armor.

Some of these wonderful old historic tanks are in need of a simple paint job. As time passes they are gaining value so they should not be allowed to perish. One hopes they are in better livery now in 2018 some 15 years later. 4.55 shows a Jagdtiger (Sd Kfz 186) or Jagdpanzer VI which is a Heavy Tank Destroyer. This had a 12.cm (128mm) main gun and this version has the Henschel suspension. Others had a somewhat similar Porsche suspension. Thanks for this great video.

This collection was transferred to another Army base where most of the popular German vehicles are being restored. The elephant has been restored, but does not run. There is a video of the whole restoration on KZbin. I miss going to Aberdeen it was only a half hour drive for me and I would just spend the weekends photographing detail for my model hobby. I am lucky to have been able to marvel at the collection. I never saw the Tiger as it was moved to Germany. But it was fun times... I kept a piece of zimmerit from the Brumbar, which I still have. I recently visited the national infantry museum there, which is an amazing place. A couple of the staff members said that many restorations are happening before it opens. @@panhardEBR actually you are still wrong. The tank was known in U.S. service as the M3 Grant. It was lend-leased to Britain under the M3 Lee. When the Allies invaded North Africa in November 1942, most of the tanks in service with the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions were Grants. They were replaced as M4 Shermans became available because the tank was to high, easily seen and the main gun was in a sponson on the right side of the hull limiting its usefulness. They should have sold this tanks to Hollywood ,where they could be used as showpieces in museum and and also be used as movie props. In that way they would also be protected as a profit generating asset for movies...and then we could see many WW2 movies with proper tanks instead of cardboards or shitty CGI's.

Suppose we should be glad they aren't all sitting up up cinder blocks, stripped and burned out. With this kinda care, it's not much of a step down though...

I prefer the Saumur museum, in France. The tanks and vehicles are in good condition, with camo, in short, more realistic .

A priceless and irreplaceable collection, just allowed to rot in the open air! Outrageous disrespect for these wonderful historic machines, and some have even been mutilated! Only in America can this travesty occur!

The Ordnance Museum has wanted to build a larger building for decades to cover the entire collection. BUT IT TAKES MAJOR MONEY TO DO!! If you truly care about the condition of the collection then donate to it's preservation. I have several times and want to again. The cash I donated help with restorations of the Panzer 4s. Contact them and ask how you can donate. www.ordmusfound.org/
