Let’s explore feelings, colors, and textures of Raag Yaman Kalyan with an evergreen classic "Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar" from the movie Hum Dono.
Raag Yaman Kalyan is often one of the first raags introduced to students of Indian classical music and is also a widely performed one. It’s usually rendered during the evening hours between 6 to 9 PM. It belongs to the Kalyan thaat and the raag evokes a range of emotions - serenity and devotion, making it a perfect choice for romantic and devotional compositions alike.
Though Raag Yaman and Raag Yaman Kalyan are often used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference. Raag Yaman Kalyan incorporates shuddha Ma (Madhyam) along with the tivra (sharp) Ma, whereas Raag Yaman uses only the tivra Ma. This minor difference adds a unique flavor to Raag Yaman Kalyan, and more expansive in its emotional expression.
"Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar" is a romantic duet originally sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi sahab and Asha Bhosle ji. The song beautifully captures the emotions of love and longing.
