A singer can sing in Abaswarams and in mixing ARR can change the pitch etc to make it sound perfect. What’s the point? Again ARR’s music actually sounds like a synthesised music, not natural like the old times. Maybe this had to happen. If not ARR, someone would have started this. Not just Abhijeet or Suresh Wadkar - a lot legendary singers from all industries like Asha Bhonsale, S.P.B, Chitra, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan have said the same about A.R. Rahman. While singing, they have no idea of the actual tune or the full lyrics or if they were singing the Pallavi or Charanam. For the same line, Rahman will try different styles and different approaches. When the song is released, the actual song and what they sang will be worlds apart. Only difference is, they all acknowledged that Rahman was more of a music magician than a composer - he crafted the song on how he wants it to be. All the legendary singers collaborated multiple times with Rahman and have always sang his songs in their concerts. If some singers are not willing to change with the changing times, it is their choice - but to demean a great musician in an interview shows their maturity.

If you are familiar with how western artists record songs and albums this will not be a surprise. Many bands like Beatles are well reknowned for doing multiple sessions in an album to experiment with ideas before they choose the final version. Rahman similarly samples a lot of styles and uses what suits his ideas. This is not just for singers but with musicians too. He will sample riffs from guitarists and rythm sections and mix them all. It is a creative process, not patch work. That is his style. However I can understand the frustration especially for singers as they sing their tracks in isolation without an orchestra which can be dull.

Exactly. I think in the 70s and 80s, new singers found it difficult to sing with live orchestra. So most of the songs were sung by established singers. Rahman's new style allowed a host of new singers to make name for themselves as stage fright was not an issue with Rahman's style. Singers like Madhushree(Sujata Bhattacharya) won't have made it in Bollywood but for Rahman. The end justifies the means and so if Rahman was successful with his way of working why would he change?. Even the only song Abhijjet did with Rahman was a super hit although the film flopped. If Rahman's approach did not yield the right results, Abhijit may have had a point. Suresh wadkar too was unhappy with having to do the song again. In Suresh's case it was stupid of him to antognise Rahman because Bollywood had given up on him and Rahman may have given him a new lease of life.

Actually this method is better even for singers as they can sing without any distraction and focus solely on their voice and rendition. And they can also focus on one portion of the song at a time. Rahman also said this is for the respect to singer voice as singer dont follow orchestration, but the orchestration follows how singer has sung. Its very dumb for some singers to complain about this method. I can see it can be problem with some singers in the 90s who used to sing like 10-20 songs in day as a factory like Kumar Sanu. But for rest, this gives them better opportunity to give their 100%.

Sonu Nigam had recorded Guzaarish song and later the lyrics changed and Sonu Nigam was not available to record it the second time. So Javed Ali was made to sing and they kept Sonu’s alaap as it was very good. This was mentioned in one of the interviews. Sometimes people don’t know the full story and misunderstand.

Music is an art. Whether it's recorded in single take or patched together doesn't make any difference. The level of creativity he brought to the table is unmatched and leaves him ranking best of the best in the industry. It may not be a perfect experience for a singer who has crafted their specific skillset over decades but ARR is a true contemporary artist. Many of his tunes were best of the best and I had spent 90% of my life listening to his songs. My Playlist always had at least 30% of the work done by ARR consistently through out the years. Lately, his work has diminished in terms of longevity but songs in his prime days are what kept me going through ups and downs of my life. No other music director can fill in his spot for me.

In the 90s many singers tried to imitate Kishore Kumar. Kumar Sanu was leading among them for a while. Afterwards, Abhijeet, Roop Kumar Rathod, Babul Supriyo, Shaan all started singing in a somewhat similar style. Rahman works differently and his record shows it works well for him. If Abhijeet had schedule issues, he was right to do what he wanted but Abhijeet has a penchant for loose talk. He says Sonu's Alaap and Javed Ali's voice was used in Guzarish but Sonu himself clarified this recently. Sonu sang the full song for a different film, but later the song was used in Ghazni with different lyrics. unfortunately, Sonu was in US and couldn't sing the song with new lyrics. Sonu said it was nice of Rahman to retain the alaap in his voice.

I think people like Abhijeet Babu does not understand the trends of voice engineering where it is not uncommon to take snippets and weave them for the best outcome. In early 80s Biddu did that with Nazia Hassan and we saw the magic. Rahaman at the beginning was possibly a bit ahead of his time and these people could not understand how he composes and mixes music. I love Abhijeet as well a Rahaman. Wish they could work together.

Yes, but he should also respect other's time. Someone has come to chennai to sing for him, you can't make him wait a day long for recording just for a few lines or something. He was a very busy singer during 90s, he might have to miss some other big songs in the process. He should inform them about time, schedule and all. Also, if a singer wants to know the lines of song, he should give it. Then, what he wants to do he can do, its his choice. But atleast let the singers know what they are singing about. Many have complained about his working method, it's not just Abhijeet..

Its not that. Why Abhijeet is angry is because the song was sung by Udit Narayan already and then he was asked for patch work on Udit's song. What Abhijeet is saying is that a great singer's song is patched by another singer because the lyrics change which shows engineering marvels but it sucks out the art. In future these singers will sing and AI will beautify their faults. The point is faults make it sound and feel human.

Talented people can be whimsical or have their own method. Kishore da is famous for extremely whimsical behaviour too. I remember Sonu saying in an interview that AR Rahman doesn't make friends. He gave him the song, sing. Sonu interpreted it as giving freedom to the singer, but I imagine some singers need a lot more structure. There's a difference between freedom and lack of direction or enough opportunity to prepare to perform well. Sonu too said he could have done the song better. But AR Rahman has a method and he delivers the music. I guess singers who can adapt to that will do well, others will be extremely disturbed.

Rahman has a very intuitive and unorthodox way of working like many great artists. Plus he is not a very communicative perosn. Singers with an ego and pride like Abhijeet will never have a proper rapport with him bcoz ultimately Rahamn will overshadow the final product. A good eg could be how great filmmakers like Ray or Kubrick rarely worked with star actors.

As a music producer, I'd like to clarify that the term "patch work" isn't a recognized stage in the production process; creative methods vary among artists. Abhijeet B seems critical of A.R. Rahman's approach, but it's Rahman's prerogative as the music director. If AB disagrees, he's free to produce and sing to his own music.
