Or have to be more powerful than US ( not possible, even US government is not stronger than these complexes , remember JFK was killed without justice delivery for planning to stop Vietnam war and developing friendly relations with Cuba). it's sad to see how easily any one question the leadership .. without even knowing the basic .. M777 - is a light weight - so that it can be airlifted and deployed fast in case of conflicts. so it's made of light metal/alloy so it's costly. K9 Vajra is self movable like a tank , helpfully in desert area. also crew is also safe. it can be moved along with tank battalion. Made with hardcore steel but as it's a similar to tank so it's more costly. now ATAGS/ATHOS are towed artillery guns. 155 cab- most common used and serve 80% of he total conunt. Made with hardcore steel but cheaper than both M777 and K9 Vajra. last dhanush - based on Bofos and developed by OFB. serve the purpose but with less range and old technology. so tell me how these are same and how you think that one can serve the purpose of all 4 needs . but yes Govt may have rejected Dhanush - but it was developed by OFB (indian guys) , govt should encourage them also it's a good gun so can be bought in small no. and ATHOS is a war proven gun - more technologically advanced with ATHOS (GPS enabled) also it's cheaper the ATAGS. All these K9 Vajra/ATAGS/ATHOS/Dhanush are/will be made in india ..
@nyetmatchbox98523 жыл бұрын
War proven? Isn't that what trials are for? The fact that ATAGS has been in testing for last 3 years isn't enough? How can you ignore the fact that for the first time DRDO has collaborated with Private partners and delivered an excellent product? Towed ATAGS has lot more practical features than Towed ATHOS. Guided Shells is the only thing lacking by ATAGS, which could be incorporated later by buying technology or payment of royalty to the OEM, like how MRSAM is being produced by partnering with Israel.

Problem is that we need to develop indigenously but simultaneously we can not accept inferior product just become it is Indian because it costs life . Honestly most of the people do not understand Arty and we should not expect them to understand , hence your effort is appreciated . Once this technology comes into the domain of private sector , it will be developed . OFB served a purpose but now completely lost .....unions are not allowing any change there ...will take time. You listen to Unions, produce inferior quality ammunition and guns---suffer casualties of soldiers ? Entire system requires streamlining .

Mind you we had taken technology transfer (blueprints) for Bofors gun also (but we didn't make any in India bcoz of the scam). The Dhanush 45 caliber guns are made from those same blueprints that were lying in Defence minister's office for almost 3 decades. And army ordered only 114 guns of Dhanush (which is a very small order for artillery guns and there is no guarantee of more orders coz army loves foreign maal. That too OFB can't deliver it on time, so transfering manufacturing to kalyani would be best). there is corruption in Army and it needs to be solved.

Thus even though it's 155mm of diameter but calibers are meant to fulfill different mission role. Our ATAGS is the Best except it's Auxiliary power unit needs a bit improvement on its cruise speed. Apart it's a best howitzer of 155×52 caliber and we should definitely order in hugh number so that it can lead to future improvement and upgrades.

Excellent. But Abhijit, so far 777 is concern, it's because of weight ,( all most half, & Cost more than double) approximately 5 ton.Other 155mm guns are allmost 10 ton +-) . 777 are for high altitude use & It may transported by helicopter because less weight. You are absolutely right. The military leaders thinks " Equipment produced by Quartermaster & bureaucrats thinks that cost of equipment paid by " Some one's ATM machine ".

You have look at hiring practices of DRDO and management of knowledge from previous design experiences. How employees are promoted.

I looked at all 3 of them and you got to see the difference. K9 is track mounted, Kalyani is towed and Elbit is wheel mounted. all are 155 mm with ranges varying a bit here and there but the most important of all is the mobility. Towed is the least mobile so most vulnerable, tracked mounted is next but limited mobility as tracks cannot run at same speed as wheel. Now, the biggest question here is when Indian researcher are looking at these guns - K9 is an import from Korea that serves their purpose, Kalyani is same as old model towed artillery but did any of them or DRDO ever thought of mobility as mobility is the biggest asset for any artillery as they can move around at greater speed and dodge the incoming firing or attack. This is the advantage ELBIT is going to provide, hence Army is going with this.

As Abhijit told, our industry is very much capable of manufacturing these. As a proposition, even if we admit that our domestic capability is slightly inferior, so what. that is exactly how a child has learnt to get up and walk. But then, the child has a father. The indian guns do not have a father.

If PGurus reads the comments under the video, let me first state that Abhijith is good at explaining Indian foreign policy and it's implications very well. However, when it comes to defence matters, please bring in an ex army or DRDO person for consultation. Let us see why Army needs different guns: 1. M777 ultralight howitzer - light guns to be air lifted and quickly deployable in heights at India - China border, Chinooks were bought for the same reason 2. K9 Vajra - Self Propelled Howitzer, it's part of standard arsenal of all modern Armies, it replaces old South African SPH made with technical support by DRDO. We couldn't come up with our own SPH in all these years which is a shame. 3. Towed Artillery such as Bofors, Dhanush, M 777 or Athos being discussed now: These are quick deployable, transported over land by trucks, fires varied ammunitions with very long range, have excellent fire control systems, are part of standard arsenal. Dhanush and recent ATAGS are decent home made guns and do perform satisfactorily. However, the army has an urgent need of modern towed artillery guns, especially keeping the China stand off in mind. Can Indian guns be made in large numbers in such short time span? How many types of shells can they fire successfully? What about spares and maintenance? Training and ease of handling, cost, and many other aspects that come into procurement of weapon systems. In fact Army is very much on board in developing home made weapons, however, they cannot rely on a newly developed weapon when the danger is imminent. Hence, they would like to procure weapons meeting immediate requirements in small numbers and supplement them with local weapons once they mature enough to be deployable. I am able to explain all these even without knowing the nitty gritty of arms procurement and Abhijith here starts with comparing 3 different weapon systems and questioning why so many different guns are even needed. He also ignores the fact that in the name of commonality and economies of scale, he advises to put all eggs in one basket, which takes away our Strategic autonomy in an event of war such as when we were running out of spares for Bofors guns during Kargil conflict due to a strike in their factory. Let's leave such matters to the respective experts and better focus on our areas of strength.

Abhijit Iyer-Mitra what you're saying makes sense... Why don't you raise these questions directly with the Indian army because you won't get any answer from the defence ministry.

I don't understand how he can compare the three- a titanium M777 ultra light howitzer, a Self Propelled K-9 and a towed artillery piece. These are completely different

This is away from the topic of your discussionSree ji. But in the ongoing covid no one pays absolutely no attention to our home grown medicines , which get brushed aside by the powerful. And yes , THEY ARE GREAT HEALERS. Could you have a discussion on the pressure by pharmas on the local medicines

Sorry, I don't know why this fascination with Abhijit Iyer, he doesn't fully understand the issue. These are the guns that India has 1. DRDO ATAGS Tata 155 2. DRDO ATAGS KALYANI 155 3. BHARAT 52 KALYANI 4. Tata 155 gun 52 cal truck mounted 5. OFB Bofors derivative Dhanush 52 cal. and 45 cal. 45 cal Inducted by Army 6. Kalyani Bharat Forge light Howitzer - 155mm 39 cal - two variants - Steel and Titanium 7. Kalyani Bharat Forge - Truck mounted light Howitzer 155mm 39cal 8. Upgunned version of 130mm gun to 155mm Gun. 9. L&T K9 Vajra tracked Howitzer. 10. DRDO Denel Bhim on Arjun Chassis not tested fully 155mm 52 cal. Indian Army selected - K9 Vajra Tracked Ordnance Factory Board gun which is derived from Bofors is different from DRDO ATAGS guns. Indian Army turned itself into a bad joke without appropriate strategic thinking when US and Russians are working on Extended Range Canon Artillery to reach out to 100kms. Goes without saying that China will soon follow and we will be stuck with silly ATHOS without upgrades. If army opts for ATHOS then there won't be any upgrades going forward and ATAGS will be a game changer for India and will be a great platform for upgrading to 27litre chamber 54 caliber and 36litre chamber 63 caliber 155mm cannons which will outrange and out gun any adversary weapons. Improved lethality of shells and Shells with base bleed and Ramjet artillery (IIT Madras is working on it) will put terror into your enemies.

Unfortunately Indian Ordnance factories have been unable to make safe ammunition till date..

In my opinion, reasons go beyond that. It is not the capabilities of our indigenous defence manufacturers or their products. Problem is with the delivery. HAL, DRDO, or else all lacks time commitment.
