Coming from a native- 1) Manipur used to be known as Kangleipak before it was renamed "Manipur",a bengali name. 2) The kangleichas/meeteis used to follow Sanamahism,a native religion before it was completely eradicated and Hinduism was forced upon the people by King Pamheiba/Garibniwaz under the influence of Shantidas Gosai in the 18th century. 3) Kangleichas had a sacred religious text linked with Sanamahism,named "puyas" which was burned by the King in his attempt to destroy Sanamahism. The day of the burning of Puyas is still commemorated to this day as "puya meithaba". A quick google search will confirm this. There are several versions of the texts and it is said that there are still some versions left which was hidden away by the 7 maichous (7 scholars of Sanamahism) in different directions of the kingdom to save the dying religion. 4) Meeteis used to practice the bengali script before meeteilon script was brought back again by several protests and it's still in use today. 5) There was no link between Kangleipak and Hinduism before the reign of Ningthou Pamheiba. 6) Meeteilon,the language of the meeteis is a Sino-tibetan language and the script is also categorized under sino Tibetan. 7) Don't believe in everything you see in the internet. *Meeteis have a rich culture of its own and we didn't thrive off of others for our survival back then. We love our culture as much as you love yours,mainlanders. So,stop saying "Oh it's just a form of Sanatan dharma","Manipuri Princess was married to Arjun" etc. It's not true. We are the natives of our land and we know more about us than you do. We've lived in this land for more than a thousand of years. We know about the stories surrounding the place and our ancestors used to tell us about our history around a phunga when we were kids so know your place.* And stop antagonizing other religion. Other people view their religion as important as you view yours. Your religion is of the same value as of others,it's not superior. And lastly there are hundreds of stories about how the hindu priests became nosy and messed with sacred meetei sites so the king had to summon the 7 maichous and use their help to cover up the mistakes of the hindu priests. This is a sole lesson for the hindu priests on why everything has to be in place, just because you're good at a particular expertise you can't mess around with something that wasn't meant for you. Now that everything is back to how it used to be,I'm glad tho.

@@psroutine7132 Native in this case means Meetei,the original inhabitants of the valley of Kangleipak. In the 18th century when the kingdom was under the reign of Ningthou Pamheiba,a hindu priest named Shantidas Gosai came and manipulated the then king into converting into Hinduism.He then made the king enforce hinduism over the kingdom's people and demolish any customs,worshipping place basically anything that was linked with Sanamahism,the indigenous religion. People who refused the forceful conversion ino Hinduism was killed,some people chose to becpme castaways and some people were also made to dip in lilong turel,one of the various rivers of the kingdom to act as a solemn oath to not deviate from Hinduism. This act was re enacted again by the meetei people in 1974 to reverse the past act and show commitment to the traditional meetei deities. You've never heard about this story because our entire history was fabricated but our ascendants kept our history alive by passing it down the generations.

The older Manipuri script is derived from Tibetan and Burmese scripts..Tibetan script derived from from North Indian Brahmi/Devnagri Script.Burmese script derived from South Indian Grantha/Pallava script..Now compare Older Meitei script with Tibetan,Devnagri,Pallava,Tamil and Malayalam scripts..The Manipur mentioned in Mahabharata was present in Myanmar not present day Manipur.Manipur of Mahabharata was famous for Mani/Ruby gemstone. . Myanmar was the only Ruby mined area since ancient time.. Arjuna travelled from Kalingapattinam to Manipur..Sea voyage from Ancient Kalinga used to take place between Kalinga,Myanmar,Thailand and Indonesia..The Princess of Manipur is mentioned as Naga Princess..Naga people are described as Short,Golden yellow skin,less facial hair..Which indirectly pointing towards Mongoloid race..Meitei culture is heavily influenced by Thai and Burmese cultures..Thai and Burmese cultures are heavily influenced by Indian culture..

This group of languages belong to the proto language proto sino Tibetan which are mainly spoken in China and are said to be originated from North China around 7,200 years ago. The script itself was also an independent one and wasn't influenced in any shape or form by other scripts before bengali was imposed in 18th century. The script was then again revived but there were some slight changes. And if you're talking about cultural differences with Thai and Burmese,then we are South East asian so there will be some similarities like there are in any parts of the continent. The Burmese invaded the kingdom in the 19th century and ruled the land for 7 years which was later called "Chahi taret khuntakpa" or "7 years devastation" because of the chaos and destruction it led to.There was not even a single people seen in the valley because everyone was scared.During this period,a number of men and children were killed and taken as slaves. Women were taken to Burma to be exploited by the Burmese men and soldiers. Some people fled to other lands such as Assam,Bangladesh and that's how some meeteis live in these places in the current day. And the meeteis that were taken to Burma also never came back and settled down there. The Burmese came across the Kanglasha in Kangla and marveled over it. They took notes of the sculpture and took it to their homes to make a similar one of theirs. And meetei culture existed as a kingdom and had its own independent culture,language,scripts way before being exposed to other cultures. Just because you see some similarities doesn't mean the stories behind it is the same. I respect your culture so I expect you to do the same for ours because cultures are meant to be respected.

Sir you missed a very important point and that is “puya meithaba” or burning of Puyas. When Shantidas gosai came to manipur with Vaishnavism, he burnt our ancient scriptures and historical records and threw it away. I heard from my elders that some of the pages are still left which we meteis really treasure.

We are Hindus + Sanamahis. We have our own religion that's still practiced and that lives in harmony with Hinduism. It's all good. I just hope less and less meiteis are coverted to christianity, though. That religion have no roots in this land and have ruined the local animist culture of most NE states/regions! There is a small community named Bishnupriya Manipuri, particularly lives in Tripura, Assam and Bangladesh who are migrated from Manipur during the Burmese invasion in Manipur. Those who were left in the state became forced to accept the Meitei language. But still exist in the Bishnupur region of Manipur. The Bishnupriya Manipuri People's features resemble with the Indo-Ariyan people. There was a long debate about the language recognition in the Guwahati High Court. The honorable High Court acknowledged the Bishnupriya Manipuri Language at last. Then Left government of Tripura recognized this language and introduced the language in primary level in the School. The famous British Historian, Gearson wrote about the existence of this people in Manipur. The famous Raas Lila was first performed in front of Rabindranath Tagore by this community in present Bangladesh and Kabiguru was so impressed by this dance form which we can see the influence of it in his creation of Rabindra Nritya. So please Sir, we would like to hear something about it. Thanks a lot.

Its not a vaishnava state, although the prevalence can be seen. It was the last Kingdom to come under Vaishnava influence that came from south west ( Bengal Provinces ). The attempt to rid people of their cultures and traditions can be seen in the process of vaishnavising the people of the region, Abhijeet Iyer Mitra is right when he says Vaishnava Sects are the Abrahamics of what is today known as Hinduism. Although I know it happened in other kingdoms and its people as well I will only put forth the case of what is today known as Manipur which was the name adopted sometime between 1714-1728 C.E. Meitei script was abandoned the bangla script was adopted and the concept of pure Impure high and low people also came with the adoption of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and Shantidas Gossain that/who charmed its/their way into the court of Ningthouren Pamheiba later known by his persian style name Gharib Niwaz.

However, his younger brother Pakhangba as per the instruction of his mother Leimarel Sidabi, went around his father Atingkok Maru Sidaba, who is equivalent to the globe. As per the declaration that among the two brothers, the first to succeed in traveling across the globe, would be offered his father's throne of the Universe. That's how Pakhangba got the throne. However, in order to compensate Sanamahi, Atingkok Maru Sidaba offered him to be the king of every household of Mankind in the universe

Also, it would be very unwise to say manipuris were limited to "10%" or "700sqkm" when the Kabaw valley of Myanmar, the size of present day Manipur, was a part of Manipur until the british came along. And if you don't trust the inks of history books, the Kohima stones would probably interest you. Those were written in stone.
