Abhorrent is amazing and this unique style of bass playing with the sort of like plucked chords or something (is there a name for this style?) is a big part of it. Will you also be using some of this style for Spawn's next album?
@ErlendCaspersen8 жыл бұрын
I guess it's strumming. Basically an old classical guitar technique, just in a slapped fashion going from thumb to ringfinger, depending on how many strings are incorporated. It's most likely gonna be a part of whatever I do for the future, as it really strays from the conventional bass sound.
@xXBiShOXx9 жыл бұрын
How do you get that monstrous tone? How much of the work does the Darkglass do compared to the guitar tonewise? Obviously technique has a lot to do with it too but I'm very curious.
@ErlendCaspersen9 жыл бұрын
+Bisho736 I wouldn't be able to tell you, since the tone(on the album) is handled by the sound engineer and I have no clue what he did. I'd say the biggest change in this specific clip is for the first time in my life caring about what strings and gauge I use. Going from regular 135 to 118 balanced tension strings has been a game changer on my end..
@xXBiShOXx9 жыл бұрын
Ah right, that makes sense. I'm used to chatting about tone with the guitarist of my band (he does all the engineering and mixing) so it slipped my mind that there would've been a separate audio engineer on the album. That's interesting about the strings though, I'll have to consider using smaller gauge strings next time I restring.

Do you remember what amp sim (if any) or signal chain was used for intransigence's bass tone?

@Remyonbass2515 жыл бұрын
@@ErlendCaspersen Thank you for taking the time to respond. I really love your tone on Intransigence. I'd like to ask why you use elixir strings on some songs instead of Kaliums? I understand they are much brighter and last longer but they feel harder to play and feel less biting. I'd also like to thank you as listening to your playing has brought me great joy and trying to learn your bass lines myself has served as a beneficial experience. The inspiration to practice you have given me is invaluable. I'm only 16 but thanks to this inspiration I have made great leaps in my playing. I am by no means as technically capable as you but thats what keeps me practicing.
@ErlendCaspersen5 жыл бұрын
@@Remyonbass251 I switched over to Kalium a few years ago after trying out their balanced sets, and have not used Elixir since. Thank you! I've yet to see anyone make use of this tab, so I have faith that you'll come around in a few years :)
@Remyonbass2515 жыл бұрын
@@ErlendCaspersen The tabs are extremely helpful as my ear is still in training. You can probably expect to see it used in a year or so. This is not the only thing i practice from you, i also practice your open palm technique (or at least try to get Matthew garrisons and Gary Willises down). I know that you don't consider yourself a teacher but id be very appreciative if you could post a video on any of the exercises you used to get it so fluent.
@ErlendCaspersen5 жыл бұрын
@@Remyonbass251 That's good to hear, as I personally would never be able to decipher much of this by ear alone. Having different right hand techniques under your belt from the get go is pretty much the best you can do. I started out with three fingers from day one, cause I "didn't know any better". It feels more natural to me than using two fingers at this point. Adding different techniques definitely improves regular plucking as well, as they tend to overlap. I make exercises based on obstacles I meet when learning new material, so there's no specific exercise or method to this. Just isolate the problem area whatever it might be. i.e Is it your ring finger? Spend a month playing with your middle and ring finger to give a better workout, and make it feel more organic to use.

Ah, so roundwound then. Are these the same strings you use on your fretless in your evangelist cover? They sound like flats in that one, though I suppose that's because they're 3 years old.
@ErlendCaspersen8 жыл бұрын
Hmm I think I might be confusing these strings. The aforementioned Kalium set is what I've been using lately. The three year old strings that are in this and the Evangelist video are most likely some Elixir set. Probably the super bright series and roundwound. Never tried flats.
