Yup always a sob story needed. It is actually in the rules/contract when you sign up to audition. When my daughter auditioned it was in the release form. There was a specific question about if they could use a personal experience that would pull at the audience and voters emotionally.

absolutely magnificent singer. She's one of the very best they've ever had on there. Listen, I can't sing anywhere near that good - she's elite. If I were to give her one little shred of input; sometimes she can get a little "nasaly" by trying to put a bit "too much" emotion into the delivery if there is such a thing. But, she is amazing and I hope she wins.
