These small moments is what’s life all about, when you unexpectedly come across magic like this ....
@raindrop63093 жыл бұрын
‘Running’ went through many versions of its self before becoming what it is now. The song was actually written last year in a two-day studio slog with a producer called Draper. I had worked with him for a few years and always looked forward to writing together - but ‘Running’ was definitely a challenge. We started the session with Draper playing different chords on the piano and myself finding melodies to follow. We established a chord progression for the verses fairly quickly, and started to craft an atmosphere in the production to carry a sparser vocal top line. I managed to write a rough verse and chorus before we decided to call it a day. Draper had a friend round that evening, so we all crashed at his place and watched a film called Requiem For A Dream. I remember lying in bed that night thinking of the film and listening to a voice note of the track, feeling that something wasn’t quite right. The next day I started writing from scratch and the opening line - ‘Keep your secrets from me’ - was born. From that point onwards the rest came naturally. Draper definitely helped to keep what I was writing as varied and interesting as possible. Going home that night I was exhausted but pleased to have such a beautiful demo with Draper’s slick production. When I revisited the song, it felt as if more could be drawn out from it to help underline the content of the lyrics. I wanted to explore an inner dialogue - for the song to question and challenge what we fear in life. Too easily we are swept away by circumstances and distracted by things that don’t help us grow. We limit ourselves to our realities, which can make life feel like a slow and repetitive routine. Ultimately, I wanted listeners to not be afraid to look inward and begin to cut away the decay that can consume us. ‘Show me the way you are moving’ so that we can ‘look’ and ‘find’ a greater peace in life. Rather than ‘running’ from things, run to them with a confidence that they can be overcome. I had been working with a producer called Mkulu for a year and a half; and I knew he could bring this narrative to life. He continues to help hone my sound, and the progression of ‘Running’ into what it is today mirrors that development. We spoke at length about what I was trying to convey, sharing historical and visual references that emphasised the songs meaning. We filled the track with old Underground Railroad sounds, replacing the existing percussion and adding new chords to parts of the track. The changes assisted in the sense of monotony that the ‘oohs’ and the chant - ‘when you’re running, running’ - carried. The new sounds represented the routines of life; and the spoken vocal acted as a facilitator in trying to break that emotional cycle. The person you actually hear speaking and asking the key question - ‘what are you afraid of?’ - is Mkulu’s voice. His co-production gave the song its legs and strengthened its message. I am blessed to have worked with two such talented individuals on this debut. www.clashmusic.com/news/listen-abi-ocia-running
