In the years following the Civil War, the town of Abilene, Kansas is poised on the brink of an explosive confrontation. A line has been drawn down the center of the town where the homesteaders and the cattlemen have come to a very uneasy truce. The delicate peace is inadvertantly shattered when a group of new homesteaders lay down their stakes on the cattlemen's side of town, upsetting the delicate balance that had existed thus far and sparking an all-out war between the farmers, who want the land tamed and property lines drawn, and the cowboys, who want the prairies to be open for their cattle to roam. "Excellent, under-appreciated movie, which I suspect fell into public domain because only cheap copies from original prints seem to be available. Randolph Scott is rock solid in the unassuming characterization of a modest but moral man acting as a moderating influence between three distinct groups, the cattlemen, the homesteaders and the tradesmen in a frontier town. Each have their own agendas, and the most alluring enticement for Scott on the bad side of town is the brassy but captivating dance hall singer, Ann Dvorak, in one of the best performances of her career, who is so fresh and sexy in her several numbers that I can well believe a whole roomful of cowboys would just sit there, stone silent with their mouths open, staring at her as she dances and flirts through her songs. I don't know if her voice was her own or dubbed, but she could sure deliver those lyrics!
There's not a dull or extraneous scene in the movie, with many well cast characters, fistfights, gunfights, a cattle stampede, romance, comedy and first-rate film noir lighting and dialogue for those who care. And besides all that, I didn't notice until about the third time I'd watched it, Scott's horse follows him around when he's on foot like a pet dog. Very subtle, never made a focus of attention by the director, one of the old-timers who had the sense to let audiences find their own points of interest. I think it's a classic." As a kid who live in the 50s, enjoyed the westerns that came to the theaters drive-ins and good ole Saturday morning shows on a small 13 inch black& white TV that was snowy most of the time. Like the Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid and Poncho, The Red Rider, Any Oakley, The Flying Crown Ranch. Gene Autry, Roy Roger’s, Plus many others. Things then seem much better. Then the 60s hit. A war nobody wanted to go to. The draft took most of us. Except Brandon he avoided the draft by buying out a member of the draft board. Brandon has always been a cheat. However, many of young Americans never got to come home. If they did, life would never be the same. It’s seemed this country forgot what was important and went sideways. Just look how we have become today. I could never think this American dream could become so distant from our teaching and morals.its so sad how corrupt things are since the last 3 years.i and millions of others who survived Vietnam were treaded like trash. We were hated when we came home. Couldn’t be proud for serving this country. Was forced to feel ashamed of our service. My world and others who served. Were cheated out of our young life for nothing. People like Jane Fonda and the socialist media robbed us. Jane with their communist propaganda radioed from Hanoi to most military serving there. She received the title on Hanoi Jane! Here she is loved by the Hollywood elites. She is a traitor to us who served. Sad of what this great nation has become we must turn it around for our children and grandchildren children. Stop this madness.seem only a few wish to stand and fight for this country it’s the only republic left. No place to go from here.

I too enjoy looking closely at the horses in a western. I’ve noticed that when there’s a gunfight or raid, nobody ever shot a guys horse so he couldn’t follow them or get away. I mean, take a cowboys horse away, and he’s grounded. It must have been an unspoken code among cowboys - never harm the horses. Or take them away.

It always gets me that directors of these western movies did worry about locations where they shot their movies. They show a scene that is in the rocky mountains in Colorado or the Nevadas in California and try to sell as Texas. Of course easterners didn't know the difference. But I guess Texans don't know there are no mountains in Texas either. I can usually guess where the movies are shot just by the scenery. But when they show sand dunes there's only two places new mexico or Colorado.
