the statistic of mejais being the highest winrate item is skewed for an obvious reason though. most people dont buy it unless they're already winning.

This is definitely an interesting strategy that feels more suited for higher levels of play. The amount of discipline and predictability of the other team is required to ensure that deaths are very low to build up the mejai's stacks. The benefits of mejai's stacks is most realized with high levels of map awareness mid game which leads to big team fights where a high AP Nami slowly but surely shifts the tides in her team's favour.
