Made that trip from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Shinkansen last September. Guards are really friendly and train is, as you'd expect, super fast.

That is a really nice day trip :) and OMG Fushimi is so crowded during weekend!!! (also Arashiyama), during weekdays it really much nicer but you don't get all the food stands, so you win some you lose some.

We spent some time in Kyoto on our trip in June and it was so lovely, especially Fushimi Inari, but wow, Arashiyama is seriously gorgeous!! Definitely going to add that to the itinerary for next time :D
