This is truly a horror film… I don’t know if I could make it through without horrible anxiety

Don’t feel bad. That’s typical. Caves are really scary- if you’re afraid of the dark, afraid of heights, afraid of snakes or spiders, afraid of tight spaces… then that kind of keeps you out of a cave. That’s why only a small percentage of crazy people can really push them… cause it’s kind of a mind job. But once you get over that stuff, I think it’s awesome. To be honest, now it’s mostly all I want to do with every waking moment of my life, if I could… is to be in a cave. For cavers, I think it can actually have a reverse effect, like I feel more comfortable in a cave than many places on the surface. There’s no BS down there, it’s just raw nature, rock and earth and water. There’s no-one giving you orders, or trying to use you for money. There’s no distractions, no social media, no artificial nonsense. It’s just you and your friends, and the underworld. Nothing is complicated. It’s the best place I can think of, really. If they weren’t so inhospitable, I might stay down there forever. So it just depends how you look at it. :)

Funny you should mention that… we sorta did encounter an ancient civilization. The good Maxatec and Cuicatec peoples of the Sierra Maxateca are very traditional, and very proud. It was our honor to be their guests.

But horror movies are designed to shock you and entertain you. They’re not real. In reality, yes, caves are dangerous. But there are no ridiculous monsters or anything. If you die, it’s only because you get hit by rockfall, you get stuck in a squeeze and die of exposure, you fall 100+ feet and kind of explode, or you die of hypothermia. So horror films don’t really have it correct. You can die from plenty of other stuff. Forget about the fantasy monster nonsense.
