Only Charlie could come up with the most iconic intro ever. It sounds so simple and sparse, it’s anything but. It’s perfection and it’s identifiable half a second into the song. Something else I’ve always loved about this track is how the drums are so high in the mix for the intro and then they drop down when the lyrics come in. Thank you Mr. Watts. Your playing was understated, your impact was giant.

As an engineer, I like unusual mixes. This has the cowbell in the right channel and the rest of the drums almost entirely in the left channel. A lot of this era Stones songs were recorded with guitars etc hard panned ( completely in one channel only). To me this added to the soundstage, but could have been done for the lack of tracks, as many early English recordings were done on everything from 4-8-12 tracks, and were limited by this. In these cases it helps create that wide soundscape. Another is Brown Sugar, and a great example is the Faces great tune “Stay With Me”, the guitars are all hard panned. Not only does this create a better soundstage, but also leaves much of the center clean and that’s where the vocal lies. I’ve been listening to many new so called “great “ productions, and almost everything I’ve heard that’s released today sounds almost mono, with everything slightly panned, and everything ends up a mess centered up, compressed, and 90% of this type of production sucks to my ears. Anyway, just put on any of these songs and a hit from today and see what you think is stereo or mono.
@jlloyd2004mcs
@jlloyd2004mcs 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesonnytackettshow7949 I’ve always loved Stay With Me. I’ll put it through some ‘phones soon. You’re right though; so much music has been compressed so much that it really does sound nearly mono. Some of the older tunes don’t sound like their old recordings after being converted to digital.

One of my best memories of this song came as a kid in my very early teens in the later 80s taking a family trip from Tampa to Dahlonega, GA in a 1981 Econoline E150 with a 3-on-the-tree and a 300-6 that had been made into a conversion-style van before there were companies that made them. A radio station along the way apparently were getting ready to change formats. I didn’t know it at the time, only later when I found out that this was a thing that radio stations do when this is about to happen for publicity. I later learned that they call this stunting in the radio biz but basically one of the areas we went through on the way to Dahlonega, GA played this song over and over and over and my whole family and I loved it. This ended up being one of our favorite memories of the trip.

Youth club was a bit boring so hear we were The Swan ,Mansfield. It was quite a sizeable place, stone slabs, stools were so heavy to lift (it stopped people fighting) looked a bit like a 'Bierkeller', Got a beer sat down, when we caught site of a rather large machine on the other side of the bar, it had enough lights to light Blackpool Tower. A large guy came through the main doors , long hair, biker boots, got a beer and walked over to the machine put a shilling in and this sound above came out it was *'in brilliant, I had never been so impressed with the sound of Honky Tonk Woman. Still love the Stones, lots of other stuff too. I'm 68 just got over lung cancer and apart from the last bit have had a ball. Thanks to Mick and the Gang for the track and all of the catalogue. I’m 67 with a youthful attitude. Back in the early 80’s my friends and I would attend parties or go out dancing. When we went home and parked our cars in the parking lot downstairs of our apartment building we put this song and danced in the lot. We didn’t get reprimanded ever! ❤

The drums on this are phenomenal. Charlie Watts was the greatest rock drummer of all time. He was of course, primarily a jazz drummer.

Well, he certainly was the greatest at playing the Rolling Stones. John Bonham was the greatest at playing Led Zeppelin and Ian Paice was the greatest drummer at playing Deep Purple.

Now you know why all original members of the Stones wanted to have Charlie Watts join to the band and were willing to have pay cut..... Charlie, I've been following you and the Stones since 1963 and you were the most modest and underrated musician for decades, but your work, loyalty to the band and being a true English gentleman is what I admire about you beside your family life with your wife and daughter. RIP Charlie, you are my hero!!!!

This song is The Stones maybe more than any other. The beginning is Blues, and the refrain is Country. NO one could do this but them. For whatever reason, this is one of the very few songs that they could never equal live, imo. There's just a magic about the studio version, and it NEVER gets old.

This song changed my life for the good in 1973 as I met my wife of nearly 50 years Janet Palmer when trying to decide what to do with my life. I chose after hearing this song to go back to where I was most happy and that evening I met the love of my life, good old Bournemouth, the hive disco.

This is probably the best stones song because the drums and cowbell give the song a rhythm, and the slow pace makes the song meld together better than other popular stones songs
