Lyricists: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Andrew Loog Oldham
Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Mike Leander
Lyrics:
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see, but not for me
I sit and watch as tears go by
My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch as tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doing things I used to do, they think are new
I sit and watch as tears go by

This is stunning!!! I have heard the Stones maybe a thousand times over the years, and I have never heard this before. Why don't they play it on the radio more? I have been binge watching old House MD shows, and this was played when he voluntarily committed himself to a psychiatric ward. Never in a million years would I have believed this was the Stones!

My parents use to have parties on the weekends where my brother and his friends use to play lots of songs for us to sing to by our outdoor fire place, and this song was always one of the songs. After a night of us kids catching lightening bugs in jars, playing SPUD on the front lawn, eating grilled chicken and whole corn, it was the perfect song for the end of the day. Such a sweet song, and my brother had a voice that should have been famous, he was that good. He's old now, I'm getting up there, but I remember those soft summer nights with a smile.

I first heard this song when my grandfather sang it in a karaoke. I was around 7-8 years old. I sang it with him as well without even understanding the lyrics. We sang it every time there is a celebration or a karaoke machine is in the house. I never heard of the original until I had the thought of "Hey, what was that song you kept singing on Karaoke as a child again?" And here we are. I will always associate my grandfather who unfortunately passed away in 2019 with this song. Now that I understand the lyrics better, every time I sing it I will offer it to him. Thank you, Lolo.

I repeatedly played this song up to now, so sentimental... something really made me so deeply sad bringing me back to old times where my parents were still alive...really missing them a lot. Missing so much those years full of love, happy playing time, fam bonding etc. Eventhough life then was not that easy but the time and love of a fam was so rich... Made me realized now that we have to devote time for the fam even at the midst of our tight work scheds because one day-you would be in that same situation in the song wherein your riches couldnt buy time and happiness... My siblings, nephews and nieces spent New Year's day in my house and just left a while ago. This song made me feel alone and sad. I want my siblinds and thier family to stay for more hours but they have their own family now, they have their own house and they have thier own life now...The only thing that consoled me was the thought that we had shared so much bonding when we're still kids and even up to college days, this thought gave me a relief... Thank you for this song which teaches everyone a life lesson😘😘😘

I get this melancholy feeling when I hear those strings kick in. Its one of those moments in the band when Mick & Keith really started finding their own strength as capable songwriters but leaving behind the man who brought them in. Brian Jones. Brian was responsible for his own destruction though. Can't say if anyone ever reached out to him or tried to motivate him to get help but nonetheless this song signifies that for me. When you're on the up and up but theres still one or two friends that are so stuck in the self-destructive ways.

My favourite Rolling Stone song bring back memories of a time long gone when I first hear this song at a carnival our young army band sing this song and the blond lead singer JC Marais 19years young totally make my heart beat faster at 14years falling in love with song and the young boy singing this song. This happens 44 years ago and still my heart beat a miss when I hear this song.
