Ableton Live 12’s generative tools can generate pretty decent chords with inversions while staying in key, so it’s a pretty neat feature for people who aren’t so good with music theory.
However, there’s another massive update to Live’s MIDI effect devices that lets you actually play the chords just by pressing single notes on your keyboard. Playing the chords allows for more rhythmical expression than just using the mouse to enter them. I’m talking about the Chord MIDI effect. And yes, we’ve had that effect since forever and it may not look drastically different than what we had in Live 11 but it’s much, much better.

I feel like this feature was probably created with beginners in mind but I just want to point out how great this is from the perspective of accessibility! Loads of people out there have decent music knowledge but simply struggle to hit multiple keys at once due to various types of disabilities and this kind of feature will make things sooo much better in that scenario

Hey, good point! They have added other accessibility features in Live 12 too, mainly for visually impaired people.

I play piano, guitar and flute. Went to music college so theory is not a problem. Now I have very bad fingers because of arthritis and struggle to move my fingers. If I play piano for ten minutes my fingers get so stiff I cant move them. Ableton’s devices help me to play when my fingers refuse to cooperate. I love it because I can keep on making music. I am 76 years old so it’s just wear and take. lol.

That's why i love the maschine and it's chord function too.. 😊 But ableton is very powerfull in it's many, many approachings to getting things done. Again, i like this kind of learning and you are one of the few, i always can really follow with all of the info! 👍🏻💯

Great video as always! I think the reason your last example “got worse” is that min11 chords are a common and popular sound, whereas Maj11 chords are very rare and sound quite dissonant (if the 11th is included on a major chord, it’s usually raised to avoid this). The old behavior forces all chords to the lovely min11, whereas I think you’re getting some Maj11 chords in the new behavior (as you said, some scale degrees are major chords, even in Fm!). I didn’t actually slow this down and analyze the pitches it’s generating, but that’s what I suspect is happening.
@bodhibeats8257
@bodhibeats8257 10 ай бұрын
BTW this is mostly unique to 11th chords. All other extensions (7th, 9th, 13th) are likely to produce pretty harmonious results - if I’m understanding the new behavior correctly. 😊

@@bodhibeats8257 Hey, thanks, this is a pretty good explanation. With 9th chords I felt it was a bit hit and miss still, 7ths worked great. Haven't tried 13ths but what you said makes total sense.

scaler is another tool you're all to invest if you want to learn music theory by yourself . It can analyze your progression and find lots of alternative scales which also work with your progression . i.e the minor11th can also be another minor/major scale in another root . And yeah it also have function to force/slice wrong notes into correct ones

Awesome! I've never used Scaler but if it can help with expanding my music theory knowledge, I'd try it.

Does it write the whole midi chord or does it just make the sound of a full chord?
@LowHeatBeats
@LowHeatBeats 8 ай бұрын
You don’t see the chord in the MIDI editor with the Chord MIDI effect but there’s also a chord generation feature on the piano roll that does write the chord.

if we press the record button i SESSION mode in 12 and change the key/scale ( at the top of the window ) as recordig - does Ableton record the Key/scale changes? Ie like a chord track?

Does this combined with scale mode MIDI effect set to the same scale mean you cant not play a chord in the chord progression?
@LowHeatBeats
@LowHeatBeats 10 ай бұрын
Not sure I understand the question tbh. It does limit you only to the chords in the key you've set. If you play a note outside of the scale it corrects it to the nearest note in the scale. You don't need to to use the Scale MIDI effect.
