Love this kind of thing. There're too many tutorials on Ableton where they go straight into some expensive 3rd party plugins rather than use the stuff that's there already. I want to know all about Operator, Wavetable, Simpler, Sampler, Tension and Impulse - and things like Drum Buss and the built-in filters, eqs and reverbs before I start shelling out for anything else.

I’m fairly new to Ableton and I agree. I’m shocked at how deep and wide the included tools are. I came into Ableton like it’s a standard DAW, arranging and editing audio, but it operates almost like a modular sampler. The simple and consistent interface belies the underlying complexity and power of its tools. I keep finding new stuff where I’m like “oh wow I didn’t need a 3rd party plugin for that”

Really wish Ableton got an UI upgrade to lean in to this modular approach a bit more. Make it possible to expand the instrument pane so I could see more than just the width of my screen at one time. Make the mappings from envelope and lfo visual, like a patch cable style or maybe a master modulation matrix and you're basically approaching something like VCV rack

At 7:33 and 7:48 you're actually talking about frequency modulation, which happens at higher speeds. Amplitude modulation is at lower speeds and sounds like a tremolo effect.
@hanshanshansans4 жыл бұрын
Not quite correct! Amplitude modulation affects the volume (amplitude) of a signal, whereas frequency modulation deals with pitch (measured in frequency). The speed at which either is happening has nothing to do with what is being modulated. In fact, in different instances either could even be called a tremolo. In production, tremolo is a technique of AM, whereas on the guitar, a tremolo bar is used for FM.

Hey bro, sorry for writing again, I got my curious mode going and I decided to do a fun test that I think you'll enjoy.. I took serum and chose a random wavetable.. i took a sampler and tried to use the same wave table from serum.. it was kinf of easy to figure out how to match both in sound at the start... a couple of LFOs in I was spending longer and longer to try to recreate the sound in sampler... but it was super fun. Make an "Live Serum Chain" and see how it works.. thanks again!

I do hope Ableton dives a little deeper into their own modulation. Also, what sets hardware modular apart is audio rate modulation as well as complexity having no impact on performance for most modules (non CPU driven).

I love this feature in max. They need to change the name of this feature. I could give you 10 reasons why, but the #1 reason is when searching for max for live devices online that are "mappable" a search query has no means of separating this feature (inner-app mapping) from devices designed with midi controller mapping in mind (as a surprising amount of max objects are not in fact mappable).

It's indeed a modular synth when it comes to LFOs and other such controls, but not as flexible for passing audio streams around arbitrarily
@bobtronic734 жыл бұрын
I think the only problem here is since it's only modulating the interface you don't get per-voice modulation for poly synths.
@MoreThanSilence2 жыл бұрын
There are Max 4 Live plugins that emulate that kind of stuff. But I would also be curious to see if it is possible to use an LFO or envelope to generate random notes. I dont't think it is possible.

I've been saying this for a while. I don't understand the Bitwig hype - Max for Live enables the same things like Bitwig's "Modulators" and "The Grid" and has been around for many years. Bitwig just has a more polished workflow around modular.
@rhyskt4 жыл бұрын
I honestly wish there was a way to expand abletons effects chain into a full screen window sometimes though, just for a better view of everything and what's modulating what. Aside from that (and the loop length for audio tracks feature being only available on Push 2), I'm really happy with Ableton.
@mischiefner4 жыл бұрын
Well Max devices were sketchy sometimes, and having possibility to use modular workflow inside a DAW without something like Max I find pretty hype worthy. Also Ableton Live Suite cost 600€ and bitwig studio only 379€. So yes I get the hype.

The problem with Ableton is its linearity. I'd like to imagine what would be the smart way to modulate master tempo/sequencer direction, so that the the music would be more "free flowing" than the grid tells you to.
@airfixx_8952 Жыл бұрын
There's all sorts of crazy sequencers available via M4L. Basically, if you can imagine it then the chances are that some boffin out there has had a similar idea too.

@LesterBrunt3 жыл бұрын
The only thing Live really lacks is more complex LFO timing. 8 bars is nothing. LFO modulator can go up to 32 but even that is pretty basic when the tempo gets faster. I don’t understand why you can’t just put in whatever you want, should be a very simple formula to calculate the exact herz. Like why can’t I have a LFO that has a frequency of 30.25 bars? Also wavetable lfo’s seem like a no brainer to me.
