A few corerctions: - 1:32 The way you explained it makes it sound like analog synths are the same thing as subtractive synths, which is quite frankly not the case, they are really two completely separate categories. Strictly speaking, analog synthesizers are synths that work purely based on the manipulation of electrical current without the involvement of a computer, whereas digital synths - you guessed it - create sound by letting a computer crunch some numbers. When we're talking about analog synthesizers that run on a computer, such as Ableton's "Analog" synth, we're really talking about _emulations_ or analog synthesizers that reproduce the imperfections in the sound of real analog synthesizers not present in regular digital synthesizers. The science behind how synthesizers and effects actually work is really interesting, I can only recommend reading up on it (sadly I don't have any book recommendations because I learned about it in university). But not all analog synthesizers were necessarily purely subtractive. There have been a number of popular analog FM synthesizers as well, most notably the Yamaha DX7. Subtractive synthesis only means that a base signal generated by an oscillator is shaped by filters, which can subtract frequencies from it, but not add any new ones not already present (in comparison to additive or FM synthesis). And of course there are also digital subtractive synthesizers that are in no way analog. - 2:48 Playing a single sine wave actually only adds a single frequency to your track, not multiple frequencies as you stated. You can easily see this in a frequency analyzer (your EQ probably has one built-in). Also interesting: Every sound ever can be represented as an infinite sum of sine waves of different frequencies and amplitudes. Though for digital audio, in which each piece of audio is represented as a series of points in time (so-called samples), these sums don't necessarily need to be infinite. If I remember correctly, the number of samples a sound is composed of is exactly the number of sine waves you need to add in order to represent this sound, but don't quote me on that. You can read up on Fourier's theorem if you wanna learn more.

this is so interesting, I never thought the fourier theory would apply to music

lots of tutorials are super dense. its nice to have more of a whistle stop tour of things so i dont get too lost in the sauce. more of this would be good i think.

These internal synths are all very convenient within Ableton, but since they're all within the Suite version of Ableton, I'm questioning whether they're really worth the upgrade price from the Standard version? Especially when there are lots of free plugins out there, or if you already have a package of synths, for instance from NI, Arturia, etc.? Still good content with very useful info - thank-you for releasing it.

they are not worth the upgrade.

I guess maybe it is worth it. It's a one time price after all.

Well the suite aims to be a voll suits it’s not just the synth there are more effects sampler is included many expansions sound sets max for live etc You can also buy everything separately so the suite upgrade is not needed however if you need like 4 extra things the suite might be a better deal

Analog is included in Standard edition with Ableton 12. I’m considering just getting Standard then purchasing Operator on its own. 11 Standard is 20% right now and comes with free upgrade to 12.
