Julie, absolutely beautiful video, deeply touched to see how much you care about preserving these houses. Unfortunately, my British colonial ancestors on Long Island New York lost our old manor houses & colonial country houses. I do have a few pieces of furniture in my home that are over 500 years old. Keep up the good work fighting to save these houses!!!

After the first and then the second world war so many landowners died and it meant double or triple death duties. That with the fewer servants available, again due to the war and after the second WW so many, especially women, had found other means of employ in shops and munufacture so the custom of servant from parent to child was no longer a thing. At one point the labor governement put the death duties up to over 90%, unbelievable but true, meaning it cost the country and the people so much of their heritage. In my mother's small highland town a very old tower house was demolished and Robert Adam asked to design a beautiful manor house that in a few years was again demolished to build a Victorian gothic castle that in tuen burnt down and now an ugly housing estate stands in the grounds.Our local lovely manor house was forcibly purchased by the local council and demolished in the late 60's to make way for a very ugly housing estate despite there being much empty land available. I used to play in a gorgeous Georgian manor house with furniture in it that today is an ivy clad shell.

It is a challenge to maintain Mapperton, so imagine how it would be for a private family to maintain Hinchinbrook! It's nice for Julie to be sentimental, but realistically she and Luke dodged a bullet.
