From what I’ve found online, it looks like Simon and Adity still own the castle and have made a go of it unlike so many others who have sought help (from Ruth and Simon) for their family houses and castles. Congratulations to them for persisting in what must, at times, have been a discouraging endeavour.

That’s fantastic news! I’m so happy to hear that. I’ve been following the American Viscountess and Mapperton The finest Manor House in Britain. She is Julie and he is Luke. The family is the Montagu family. They are the heirs to Earl of Sandwich. The house they are in now is 500 years old. V original family home was called hitching gate which Luke’s grandfather sold in 1952. They simply couldn’t make it anymore. Luke’s dad who is the Earl (Luke is the Viscount grew up at Hitchingbrooke and was in residence as the house was being sold. They have done so many great things trying to save Mapperton by opening it to the public. This is now their existing family home it also has ties to the Montagu’s even though it’s not the original family seat. Luke and Julie have opened it to tourists. They started a cafe, she does Yoga retreats. They have Glamping as well as luxury experiences. They let out some cottages on the estate as well. They don’t have any pretense. I think people like me and maybe you think these people are snobs or think they’re better than us. But like Aditi said here, they actually withdraw because they don’t want people to think that about them… Unfortunately that does give the impression that they are snobs lol. I live in Canada and I find this history so fascinating❤

I think the venue made it, but even though it shows him and his daughters (no wife in the picture) - it states his influence to 2017 on their website under 'history'. Either way, I hope it stayed in the family, but it doesn't sound like it, which would be a shame.

This may have been filmed over 10 years ago, but only being 30 miles from Glasgow, I don't see how they didn't connect with the Glasgow tourist bureau. Or even Visitscotland. It is a perfect location for weddings and events. Especially corporate ones! I have been dragged out hours away just to visit these places, as an International meeting and events planner. 30 miles is nothing! (I am only 10 mins in so I may be speaking too soon!). Not to mention that they should have been able to get funds from the Crown, or Prince Charles (at the time), who has always been very intent on helping properties such as these, rich with history! Maybe now as King, they can reach out and see whom they can apply to for help!?

The current Laird is just a steward of Scottish history. That history is not only his families, but the people of Scotland. It's easy to pass these estates on and say "be done with them", yet that is literally taking away a physical piece of Scottish history. Once gone, it cannot be resurrected. I think it is wonderful that these families are willing to roll their sleeves up and utilize some elbow grease to help preserve these treasures for future generations to enjoy. Well done!

The castle now is an amazing success ! I suggest checking it out ! 🙂 they have tons of recreation, the accommodations and even a restaurant/cafe, which looks to be a brand new building. so happy for the family. i read the actual tale word for word about a relationship to the king where a peasant farmer who heard a commotion only to see a very finely dressed gentleman being accosted, he went inside his home and got a weapon and went outside to assist the man and was able to fight off the attackers. he took the man inside and helped him with his wounds, he walked him back to edinburg and on their way he was asked what he would most like, after the gentlemen identified himself as royal nobility, the farmer said his own farm land that he could tend. he was invited back to the castle the following day and the king being amused by this response gave him a farm, which had an official name i don’t know, sorry lol- the bargain came at him (king) having his hands washed in the basin and pitcher- the rest is rock and roll 😊❤

800+ years of family history in one place, I can trace my male line a little more than half that far back. If I was them, I would do everything in my power to preserve this old place. 99% of families have been in their current home less than 50 years. And that library is to die for. I'm thinking that place would make a wonderful storybook/fairy tale wedding venue.

What I always wonder is wether the UK and Ireland don't have era-festivals? As many of Germany's grand estates and castles financing themselves by visitors and events have gotten their names into the wider public by organising things like "Ritterspiele" - tourneys including medieval markets, a folk festival with beertents and workshops on their grounds. It draws on a large existing community of era enthusiasts willing to put a lot of effort into it for free, envelopes the local community and builds its enthusiasm for the heritage as well as showing them the benefit they can get by supporting the maintenance of the estate and gets a ton of people in who might remember it when planing a day trip or even a marriage. The most important part is to embrace the local community and become the traditional pillar of the community the castle has been in times past.

I'm an Architect in the USA. The first thing I would do is have the roof assessed then repaired or replaced with a new single ply membrane roof like a fleeceback TPO or PVC membrane roof over a 1/2" cover bd. (DensSheild) and 6 inches of polyiso foam insulation. Copper roofing would be ideal, but they obviously can not afford copper roofing. 2nd priority - weatherproofing the facade & fenestrations. Get that shell water tight first and foremost! Then move on to fixing the interior... I would recommend reaching out to Sika Sarnafil corporation for consultation on any masonry waterproofing/stabilization issues you may run across...

You realise that HERITAGE LISTING means they HAVE TO stick with slate right? This is even the case in Australia where some of the oldest buildings are early 1800s. I'm damn lucky what I live in isn't heritage listed. But there's plenty identical to mine so it wasn't. One of my uncles houses was heritage listed.

The divide "of us and the pompous aristocracy" this family as they stand in this program alone are worth this falmies history to survive as stated at the end of the program for another 800 years, as they appreciate what they have and where they have come from rather than look at it as a god given birthright to have it all.

The attitudes of Aditi and Simon made the difference in the success of keeping their family castle and making it a success. “We are both fighters”. They had only been there for two years and had not been there for years, waking up every day to such a monumental and daunting project, like other families had which can grind you down mentally and physically. My heart goes out to those who had to sell their country homes. It doesn’t mean they were failures. Everybody’s path in life is unique.

@@mujkocka Agreed - and most importantly, that maintenance costs money. Even regular houses for mere mortals 😁 need maintenance - one little example is roofing. If it's not kept up, water damage will eventually happen. Imagine the cost to upkeep roofing for a castle! Windows, exterior doors are other examples. ... I know all too well. 🙄 My home is overdue for windows. I just have a 'regular' home and it's quite costly.
