I have two of the Rucker straight edges to machine for Clarke and for these two I'll be using the K&T mill, and then over to the shaper to machine the 45 degree angle. Check out vintagemachinery.org for info on ordering a Rucker straight edge. Also, Clarke's website windyhillfoundry.com for other products and services.

The only issue I have with the shaper is that Abom *loves* to try and hand-hold the camera, and he's not exactly a professional steady-cam operator. It's like watching the blair-machinist... I usually end up hiding the window and just listening to him until the shaper parts done.

Exactly. I don't get why people whine when he chooses to use the shaper. It's his shop, his customer, and his tools. Unless he's putting out substandard work (which we all know he would never do), nobody should be griping about what he chooses to use.

@Kenionatus
@Kenionatus 3 жыл бұрын
The set up for these parts is pretty basic, so I newbies who don't know how it works would be best served by a tutorial. He did cover the (at least for me) unusual parts, namely the sand paper and why he choose to use the shaper. Also, a lot of the important bits of the set up aren't really visible in sped up (or even normal speed) footage. Namely making sure your vice and other parts of the work holding are square (lots of people just leave a square vice on their machine until they need to take it off), choosing the right cutting tools and parameters and making sure there are no chips between work holding and work piece. I would get bored pretty quickly if I'd hear the same steps explained in every video. On the other hand, I appreciate it when I get to see custom setups because sometimes I see really creative solutions I'd never think of myself.

I love watching your videos. Your craftsmanship is awesome! The only comment I have about these Ruckers is, it would have been an "old school" touch to flat cut both sides of the handles so that the 4 uprights, the curved ends and Rucker would have been flat - probably 30 or 40 thousandths out of both sides. Just my observation - they are cool no matter what. Can't wait for the next vid - KEEP IT UP!!!

Please Please, Please, would you please let people know the safety of filing a piece on a turning lathe with a file that has no handle. I know a friend who tried filing without a handle, the file grabbed the turning piece and ran the rat tail handle into his forearm. 31 or 32 stitches and he still does it. You my brother are a very top notch machinist. You believe in safety. Please do this for everyone's sake. Just mention it during one of your videos. Keep the videos coming. I love your videos.

@@wrangler5729 When Adam worked for Motion Industries he was their top machinist and helped them fulfill some huge contracts which earned the company hundreds of thousands (maybe even millions) of dollars, he loved that work and would not give it up unless he was certain he could earn the same salary they gave him or better on his own. Part of the agreement he made with them was not to poach Motion Industries clients which he was happy to agree to because he had other plans. A man with a with the skills and reputation of ABomb is going to be in high demand in machining and he would never sit around while is fully equipped workshop sits idle and only produce one or two short videos per week. The amount of money he has invested over the past few years was substantial and he will be doing as much as possible to make that workshop pay for itself, I have no doubt that he is not relying solely on YT income and T shirt sales ! As far as 'unrealistic videos', he only shows the simple projects which he can upload in short videos to show viewers set up tips and different techniques. I am sure there is a lot going on behind the camera that we will never see for multiple reasons but Adam works up to 7 days every week in his workshop, you can be certain of that !

@16:16 - So, you were feeding down into the part on the sharper. Not I understand that the cutting with that feed might "push" the work further into the vice rather then perhaps "lifting" the part. I was just wondering if you could have the "feed" move up the cut? That way if you get distracted you cut air, not the part, the vice , or the machine... It might not be "Best Practices" for the science behind the cut and how the tool works, but it seems much safer.

The clapper is angled to swing the cutter away as well as forward on the backstroke. The table itself on the shaper isn't moving for these cuts at all, only the tilted "vertical" feed on the head is moving between strokes

You said the planed finish is not going to be as nice as a milled finish. I dunno man, there is something, perhaps a Timeless Beauty about a planned surface especially after it has set for 75-100 years and gets a patina to it. Since these surfaces are probably going to be scraped it does not really matter I guess. However in my experience a planed finish seems to be a lot nicer to scrape or maybe I just prefer it that way, who knows! . Either way it gets the job done and the tool is a gonna be a nice one when scraped in. cheers edit: fix atrocious spelling errors!

I think he meant the round spot at the beginning of the cut, it stops at the point where the first inserts hit the workpiece on the backside of the cutter, also on the finished piece, I'm not sure what causes it, since the pattern after that spot suggests the head is trammed close to perfect...would like to know.
@stacy6014

I would say its the movement of the head after the cutter clears one side. Cutting right to left, the force is pushing to the right then the face mill clears on the left. There is some flex in every setup. I would bet it is only a few tenths. My mill does the same thing.
@Orxenhorf
@Orxenhorf 4 жыл бұрын
Don't know. I noticed it too though. My best guess would be some slop in his mill where the tool position is shifting based on whether or not both sides of the cutter are touching the surface or not, but I can't figure out which direction it would be to make that pattern. It looks like when it's over the right hand edge the tool axis is tilted like \ (exaggerated of course) but then shifts to | without touching the work that's already been done.

@Ronald Farley okay, so it is done with a down feed. Fair enough. But if the cutting tool was oriented perpendicular to the table & the step over of the table was equal to the amount of down feed, that should produce a 45 degree angle on the cut. If the tool however is placed at 45 degrees then it seems to me, and of course I am not getting this right then the downfeed would have to be equal to the step over times the square root of 2 to get a 45 degree angle. Undoubtedly, I am overthinking this.
