Enjoy the sites and sounds of a manual machine shop including lathe, mill and shaper machining. No talking, no explanations, just video of various jobs that have been completed over the years.
This is not a format change for the Abom79 channel. These videos are a project my wife Abby has been working on to practice video editing and use the footage that's already been taken and archived. All of the video seen in these ASMR videos are featured in project specific videos already published to the channel. If you're looking for something specific, use the magnifying glass icon on the home page and search for key words, like "shaper" or "lathe". Using the search feature is a great way to search the channel for older videos.
We hope you enjoy! #abom79 #asmr #asmrsounds #machineshop #manualmachining

You could certainly make this channel just about teaching about machining (and you do a heck of a job teaching Adam, speaking as a teacher), but there is so much history and tradition around manufacturing and atmosphere and sights and sounds around machining that you and Abby both know need to be conveyed and experienced too. You are a great team, and thanks for all that you do to share your shop with us!

I will share that like this “show without the telling” format, Adam. Through your large library of videos, you’ve taken us through just about every procedure and set up. There are times when it nice just to watch the chips fly. I appreciate the time and effort required to put videos together. This format gives you something of a break. I know you’ll continue to offer your more usual fare when and as projects arise. Cheers.

@@Paulster2 I never said you weren't entitled to your opinions or that you shouldn't express them. I'm sure Adam is fine with your comments, especially because any feedback, good or bad, bumps him up in the algorithm. I just suggested you skip the ones you don't like, and reassure you that these type are not a replacement for the others. For me, sometimes I just like to watch machines work - I put it on a big screen and turn up my music. Adam, the entire sum of what I know about matching I’ve learned here on your channel. I’ve run woodworking equipment but never a lathe or mill, but your style of instruction makes the subject feel very approachable to the uninitiated . One of the things I find so fascinating by this video is the vast array of speeds and feeds. I’d love to know more about how you choose a specific speed and feed for a particular material and procedure. Are there reference tables in the Machinery’s Handbook, for example? I think more information about how you make these decisions would add another layer to the information. Love the channel, thank you.
@KeelanLightfoot
@KeelanLightfoot Жыл бұрын
I’m by no means a pro, but I think for a lot of machinists, speeds and feeds becomes a matter of intuition. The machine speaks to you. You can tell when you’re pushing it too hard by the sound the motor and gearing makes, you can tell if your feeds are off by the sound of the cutter and by the appearance of the chips. You can feel the vibrations in the machine. When it all comes together, its smooth as butter and the machine purrs.
@musicbro8225
@musicbro8225 Жыл бұрын
There is a degree of hands on intuition involved in manual machining but the fact is it's mostly about the speed the workpiece is traveling past the tool, the type of Cutter and it's edge profile and the material being cut. You can see when doing a 'face' cut (the surface at the exposed end of the workpiece), the surface speed goes from fast (at the out side diameter) to quite slow (when you get to the center) there will be a range of surface finishes. Yep the recommended surface speeds will be in the handbook or if you're using an 'insert' (Carbide) I guess you would go to the insert manufacturer. Not a pro either...

@@caphenning That's a valid point but I think the description couldn't make it any clearer in that this is just something that Abby is using to learn video editing. I'm not sure how anyone can say what should or should exist on someone's channel, surely this is in the gift of the channels owner. Clearly they are a team and I applaud Adam for putting his faith in Abby, I think constructive feedback is what is needed and if this isn't something you like or are interested in then just accept that it wasn't for you. I personally cannot get enough of the machining content especially the shaper, the building of the new shop whilst it's great to see Adam prosper doesn't really do it for me, so I just accept that video wasn't for me and look forward to the next instalment. I don't feel there is any need to comment that it's not what I want and certainly wouldn't feel I should be saying that it shouldn't exist on the channel. I subscribed to you channel a few years back in order to learn more machining techniques and you did a pretty good job of it. Alas, that is no longer the case. Today there is more talk about the various machines you have accumulated than there is actual usage. Then there is the videos on going to museums, tradeshows, and tours through manufacturers facilities. Another thing that seldom happened before but has become the norm is the promotion of certain products and machines. Now we are getting soundbites from the past. Things have changed to point where one might start to question the advantage to subscribing to this channel. You may want to think about that and perhaps refocus on the original intention of the channel.

It's the unfortunate reality of making income through social media, content starts to become watered down because it's way easier to make and takes less investment than in-depth tutorials, etc. Adam's a good guy, and I've supported him since 2015. You just have to look past it somewhat; it's not really his fault, it's just what the algorithm prefers most of the time.

One who has come along in leaps and bounds whilst staying in his lane is Keith Rucker. His work overall is increasing in its challenges, having recently done gear cutting and helical gears is next. His machine renovations together with being highly proficient at scraping go well beyond what Adam does. And he puts out 2 videos every week whilst holding a full time job and also doing volunteer work at the railways museum. Whereas some of Adam's projects go almost back to apprentice level work nowadays. Hope the new CNC stuff works for him.
@KeelanLightfoot
@KeelanLightfoot Жыл бұрын
@@richardjones-sl2zdBut also keep in mind that Keith is on a different trajectory than Adam. Keith works a white collar job completely unrelated to machine work, so he has money coming in from his day job to fund his machine shop. KZbin is Adam’s job. Keith could stop making videos tomorrow and he’ll be fine. Adam needs to keep feeding the monster, or the algorithm will pull the plug. With that said “whilst staying in his lane”?! Are you serious? Are you that entitled? If Adam or Keith wanted to start posting videos about woodwork or tomatoes or aquaculture or oil painting, that is entirely their prerogative. I love watching the machining and the audio and i like all of his machining videos as well. This sort of video isn't for everyone but i think it is a great show of machining as ART and people should look at it that way.

Nope, Adam, I'm sorry, but I didn't sign up for this. I know you've got to move on & up to reach your dream and I wish you the very best but it's no longer educational and entertaining. Cruising around the country and barbecue and buying CNC...trying to be too many things to to many people.

I love the sound of a machine just doing it's thing. One of the few times I wouldn't have a radio playing in the shop, was when I was running the Bridgeport, or making sizzle sounds with a welder. I Miss that machine. Sold it off before a big move. Need to find another.

All the people who requested this... Grrrr. If all the clips were part of doing a project then maybe I would enjoy it more, currently it's kind of meaningless to me... Just my five cents worth.

“Grrrr”? lol. Just don’t watch. It’s not hard. In fact, it’s easier to not watch than it is to watch, get upset, and comment that you’re upset. Adam and Abby aren’t making you angry, you’re making yourself angry.

@@KeelanLightfoot It's just frustration, not that one word is going to communicate my thoughts so I used a more generic expression. I will add that your comment is upsetting but this is the comments section after all so that's all good :P In all the years I have been sub'd to Abom the last two videos are unique so I'm giving my take on the change and I'm not just saying that I don't like it (Grrrr). Read my comment again for the creative suggestion... On another note, are you related to Gordon?

Coined in 2010, ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a relaxing, often sedative sensation that begins on the scalp and moves down the body. Also known as "brain massage," it's triggered by placid sights and sounds such as whispers, accents, and crackles. From the google machine

I agree with others... I could watch this stuff all day. As another poster mentioned about a tutorial on feeds and speeds for types of material would be great content for video. What has me baffled is how you get almost a polished chrome finish even when cutting a rough .250 cut on steel. Short of a CNC machine, you get the award for best finish on manual lathe. That sounds like a interesting competition since someone started the best chip award. LIke these vids as we have content while you are off driving around america. Of course we like those videos of you and Abby documenting your travels around america too.
