SNS 148: Machining 12" Shaft, Internal Threading, Hand Tapping

Күн бұрын

This week I'll start off with a couple viewer gift items I received. I also rant a little about customer service.
At work I have been working on a 12" diameter gearbox shaft. I show some footage of pressing the gear off, and then the setup in the Pacemaker lathe. One end requires an internal 2 1/2-4 thread, so I do some single point internal threading, then make use of a 2 1/2" hand tap and my Greenfield No. 22 tap wrench.

Finally someone says it! I feel the same way. My grandad told me when i was little "everything you do is the same as your signature" i hear him saying that im my head on every project i do. I guess more people should have listened to my grandad.

Abomb79 Been watching you for some time now, love what you do makes me want to push myself further to really learn machining from what I learned back in the day... Thank you for what you do. I cant even pretend to imagine the impact you have had on many of us that view you on KZbin, specially after reading many of the comments through out the years but thanks man... You do a service to us all, you certainly are a master and a gentleman in what you do for us all. ..... Marry Christmas and a happy new year, Jesse C.

That tool you found @ flee market is Peck Stow & Wilcox Co (or PC&W Co) Wing Divider. It was made of forged steel and was available from 5" to 24" and 3 finishes, polished (#35), nickel plated (#135) and gun metal (#235). If I'm not mistaken it's damaged, nut for fine tuning is missing and stud that allows curved part to flex (and fine adjust angle in between wings) is broken and probably some how secured to left wing. Spring is in max tight position. Tool has many uses, from navigation (reading maps) to marking in metal fabrication etc.

I can't believe this was 5 years ago already! The rant about customer service is on point. I think the problem is that much worse nowadays because people *DON'T* call it out and just excuse it as "that person's having a bad day." Even if that's true, when you're in a customer facing position, that's part of the job! You gotta offer service and take care of the customer. I'll not say "the customer is always right" because anyone whose worked such a job knows damn well that isn't true, but it's not a difficult thing - communicate and always try to under-promise and over-deliver. Tada...happy customers.

I know this is an old video but as soon as you said you had to “call” I was listening but then when you said the distributor had a date and the middle man who sold you the product didn’t have one I felt your pain. True quote “ it either get better or gets worse” and judging from the videos you have posted after this you got threw it absolutely love the content, I’m not a machinist but I am a perfectionist. The thing you said about customer service is spot on man. On rare occasions I've been impressed with a few select individuals at restaurants and such but it seems those people don't stay around long. I've done architecture for years and no matter what the client asked for, if it was at all possible I would always do whatever I could to make it happen. There were times where I worked 8am til 2pm the next day to make it happen. The way I look at it is all about building relationships with customers and hopefully the customers remember that next time they need services.

No worries on the rant buddy, I know we all agree with what you said as we have all been there and experienced it as well. Service and quality is lacking these days and it burns your ass when you strive for perfection for your own customers then get crapped on when you go to spend money. Great footage on the start of the shaft work. My dad and I sat and watched it and he was blown away at the size of that job. Going to be a fun one!! Thanks buddy and Merry Christmas!!

Adam, regarding your rant about poor customer service. You are right. I’m over 65 yoa and have seen the complete disregard for customer care from services across the isle. People have no respect for others. Paying customers are treated as if they could go to hell. It is my unfortunate opinion that this will continue. There is no pride in workmanship by any trade today. Thank goodness some like you still do care and provide honest, courteous customer service.

Hope you don't mind a suggestion Adam...Weld a piece of 1/2" round bar to a square block, clamp it to the carriage and rest the tap wrench against it. Start the machine and follow the wrench with the carriage...when the tap reaches the bottom it'll just bend the bar out of the way and spin harmlessly...no need to bust your nuts trying to hold it. Love your channel, please keep up the good work. Greetings from England

Those knipex parallel pliers is a really good tool. I think it is one of the best hand tools i have ever bought. They have so many uses, and they don't chew up the things you use them on like normal channel lock pliers do. I use the knipex a lot on nuts in stead of finding the right size wrench, or using those horrible adjustable wrenches. They are a little expensive, but it's defiantly worth it.

Adam, I don't know if you read these (old video) but I have a set of dividers just like yours but much more "Abom sized" as they are 10". Mine are Roy's & Wilcox which make them easy to date because of the company changing to Peck Stow and Wilcox later. Mine are marked clearly and were stamped. 1870s is what I found. Someone's initials too. I love holding them, I think I can feel some of the other hands which have used them. I really appreciate and enjoy your videos and am trying to watch them all. Adam, I share your frustrations! It may just be me, but it seems as if here in the South it has gotten out of hand. I just returned from spending Christmas in the northern part of San Diego County. I have never been so impressed with the attitude and treatment I received there! I was made to feel as if I were the most important person in their business and that was every where I went! I get back home here in the South and it's like "I'll wait on you if I feel like it". And it's not just in the area where I live. I lived 16 years just a few miles down the road from you. Same thing. I moved back home a bit north of you and same thing. Sad, sad, sad! You just keep on being who you and give the service you know you should because you are the only person you have to look at in the mirror every day. This sad entitled generation will come to terms with themselves eventually.

Seasons greetings to you and yours there Adam. It has been a pleasure this year to wait with enthusiasm each week for your filems and as ever I enjoyed and learned with every one. Here's to another year. It's a bugger with that there car port situation but unfortunately some companies just don't get that 90% of the job is customer relationships. I could really sense in that promo your company did that you linked to back in the summer? how important customer relations was to your company and I take my hat off to you and them for that. I must say as well how appreciative I am that your work lets you filem while working. It gives any prospective engineers a real idea of what working in the trade is really like. Adam, we now live in a different world. Customer service, quality products etc seem to be part of an era we will not see again. I live ‘down under’ where once upon a time we made things and employed people, sadly, not anymore. Our government & manufacturers finds it easier to get stuff made in another country-we export all our quality raw materials and import them back as cheap badly made crap. Welcome to the 21st century. I have tools that were my dads, over 100 years old now, but made in England with Sheffield steel, still as good as the day they came out of an English factory. Today, it is all about profit and greed. In many ways I am happy to be over 80 rather than 18. 👍🇬🇧😁🛠🇦🇺🦘

Adam, It is funny I had a very similar experience with a carport company here in Oregon. I ordered the carport from a middle man dealer and was contacted by the manufacturer to confirm my order. They told me it would be delivered in 2 weeks and they would call me 2 days prior to let me know when they were going to be there. After the THIRD week of not hearing from them I called and they told me it was going to be two more weeks. After a few choice words expressing my displeasure, They managed to have it up a week later. Needless to say I will not be using that company again. .

Hey Adam. Merry Christmas from the land down under. If you are not getting the service, tell them to put it where the sun don't shine and go to their opposition. Those Knipex Pliers are the ants pants. All my Circlip pliers are knipex and are well over 25 years old. Very well made. The Dividers look like an old Moore & Wright. Happy machining.

I am a pool repair contractor and I treat my customers with respect. The number one complaint I hear is how hard it is to get companies to call them back or show up. I don't know how these big companies stay in business. If I didn't answer my phone or return calls I'd go out of business. The larger companies hire people to run their operations, but those people just don't care about their jobs. They only need to collect a pay check and could care less about the company they work for as well as the clients of the company.

Yes I have one of the dividers like you are holding. Mine has the brass washers at the pevot point as yours as well as yours. However my dividers has a fine tune adjusting nut and has a threaded shaft that passes through the divider shaft above where your thumb is with a nicly knurled thumb nut. The manufactures stamp reads as follows. P.S. & W..Co. with a ric rack border in compasing the manufactures name.Below the thier name reads Forged Steel .On the opposite side there is what looks like an Army Ordinance flaming bomb insignia. So mine where probably purchase for the US Army. I also purchasd the dividers at a swap meet or a garage sale many years ago. They are still blood drawing sharp..I hope this is of some help. I rely enjoy your vidios and find them educational and I learn many adaptable ideas. Thanks, Vern

Thanks Adam, you've just given me the confidence to use a 3/4 x 12 tap to centre thread a new backing plate for my recently acquired 4 1/4" Pratt 3 jaw (from a 1" long slice/bar end). I only hope my tailstock is up to the task. As you can guess from the bore size, my lathe is a little bit smaller than yours ;-)

Sad how thinks have changed with costomer service. I run in to the same thing. I own, run and do the work for a home remodeling bussness for 22 years. And treating people right always helped to grow my company. Totally agree with you on your comments! Thx for the videos. Very enjoyable.

'Jee that brings me back... A real legend and likely hero, even today, for the past present and future. I remember being 8 or 9 years old, Abom79 poster on the back of my door, and all the trading cards too! Delivering newspapers everyday... Rain, Snow, Sleet, even Tornados, and through a union strike, I saved every quarter I could just to pick up that mint hologram Abom79 in rare British pipe thread, the card of all cards. I kept it proper; vacume sealed glass brick, the sunscreen exposure shield. Made sure not one single photon would change that perfect Abom hologram shine and damn it was worth it. Got me through highschool, two tours in the Coast Guard, and then paid up the down payment on my first home. I still keep one of the Max Torque and Precision Finesse tournament boosters from the first starter deck in the back of my wallet. Memories' I tell you.

I have a pair of those like that - longer - and were circ 1930's. I got mine from Paul Montgomery, a electronic hobbyist and the nations oldest Actuary working for a Dallas insurance company. My Father-in-law delivered mail to him every day after he returned from WWII. Nice lifting Eye. I have some for my surface grinder. I'd need a larger overhead than the shop has. So they are on heavy pallets and work fine.

happy Christmas Adam, those pliers are great, just be careful to make sure that the little slip button is properly engaged, they can be used like a ratcheting plier for smaller nuts, so are directional.

Adam, Merry Christmas! It's not just you, I have to agree with your rant! It's really not too much to ask to be kept in the loop when you contract out work. I have both good and bad experiences, the good I rehire, the bad, they are still bad, they are just not working for me!

In the UK we have a saying for when we get let down by a supplier... "Screw 'em". We learned this from our American cousins and I am proud to acknowledge this. Buy your car port from someone else Adam. These people are not a worthy company to receive your hard earned money. BTW - Knipex are great quality and they cost the earth!

when I saw that piece of 12" round hanging one end off that tiny little center , I couldn't help but think of the loads on/ forces acting upon that live center- and the tailstock- not to mention the steady. Hard to believe that kind of accuracy with that amount of mass.

Adam, cancel he order. In fact when they show up to do the install, tell them to leave with their product. I do customer service for a living. I sell auto parts for a major Toyota dealership and if we get complaints like yours we have 1 or 2 choices, either fix the problem or hit the road. There is no excuse for the way your being treated.......... Ok rants over. I enjoy watching you and the work you do is superb

I grew up with your reputation is only as good as your work and I live by that to this day. When I was a roofer I treated every roof I worked on like it was my own home because that's how my dad was taught by his dad. Outside of the trades you rarely seen the kind of service that's actually worth paying for...
