Vulcan Park, Birmingham AL

Our visit to Vulcan Park in Birmingham. This was the first stop on our two week road trip. Beautiful place and great view of the entire city!

This brings back some great memories of my younger days. I went to Samford University at Birmingham AL and lived close to the Vucan. We spent many Sunday afternoons walking up to the Vulcan park and enjoying the mild southern weather,,,thanks for the memories. STEVE RICH

I remembered being up there back when I did my internship at USS Steel when I saw this video. It is an awesome view! That looks like one of my bridge crane wheels on the top left of that sample board. :-)

You two are so much fun! Acrophobia, me too, and most people would not be so willing to admit or show their unease as both of you were. Many years ago I decided that I would go up on the roof of my house and reattach the lead wire for my TV antenna. It was a two story house and the roof was tricky. It had an area near the edge that was a gentle curve and I had no trouble getting off the ladder. I then realized that the roof got very steep and there was no way I could get myself up to the top and the chimney where the antenna was located. I got very freaked out trying to get back on the ladder to the point that the only thing I could get myself to do was to sit down on the roof. I decided that I'd ask the first person who came along to call the Fire Department to help me get down. Well, nobody came along! I finally got myself to think about what I had done to get off the ladder in the first place and did it in reverse. And, yes, I had no business going on the roof without someone else being there, but some of us learn the hard way, and if we are lucky, we survive to learn something else!

Generally speaking I'm not too bad with heights overall but the whole "grating floor with a clear view of the ground" thing would get to me too. But, the shot was worth it for sure. Always appreciate you guys taking us along for the ride when you go on these trips.

I only visited The Vulcan Park only once since 1986 and it was fun except I didn't get on the elevator or go way up cause I'm afraid of heights too and I don't blame her not only that it's fun but yet at the same time very scary

Nice views, that saves me from ever going up there. I had butterflies just watching. I survived a thirty foot fall in the navy years ago, so I don't do heights very well. I probably would be dropping brown bombs. Look out below.

Mountain Brook and English Village are *really* nice areas - Cahaba Heights is pretty nice, and Chelsea is a nice area to live without being so pricey... as is Hoover. Lots of decent places to stay & eat alon I-459 between the two ridges, south of Birmingham proper. If the steel industry hadn't been wiped out after '08, I might have moved there...

You both should visit the glass walk at the Grand Canyon, it is at least 1,000 feet above the canyon and you walk on just glass.

Jumping is 'different' for some reason... in my youth I jumped more years than I care to admit with no issue. But walking on that grating and/or tall ladders gives me the creeps just thinking of it... ugh. Went to an Apple store once that had a glass staircase... double ugh!

As a 14 year old we went on a trip to a coal fired generating plant one stop was the top of the furnace 8 stories up open grating all the way to the bottom of the furnace, when we walked out onto the grating I was last in line and the guy in front of me froze I just gave him a push and it was too late for him to turn back, he was alright but all through HIGH SCHOOL noone give me any crap or they had to deal with him. I guess I am lucky heights and confined spaces don't seem to be a problem for me.

Birmingham Alabama is the traffic jam capital of the world. There is no quick way to get from one side to the other and it is always rush hour no matter what time of the day you try to make your transit. The new I-22/I65 interchange has helped a bit for folks coming down from or going up to Memphis but in my case, I usually go South via US 280 and getting across the mountains is still a bitch.

Houston and Boston are *much* worse than either Birmingham or LA... Boston has the narrowest highways with the heaviest traffic. Atlanta is also worse in my experience... Give me LA every time over those cities... The 280 / 31 through the ridge south of Birmingham is only slightly annoying, but the I-65 can be a right PITA, and the 65 / 20 interchange is a mess. Fortunately, in the mornings, it clears up north of the 20 pretty quick, and then it's clear sailing up to Huntsville...

Yes, I was born in the Good Samaritan Hospital in down town LA. My first ride was up the Arroyo Seco Parkway and now known as the Pasadena Freeway. Raised in nearby San Gabriel. Enlisted in the Army in 1960 and every time I came back to visit it (LA) was worse than before. While I occasionally visit LA these days I live in Arkansas and love it. I agree that Atlanta is bad but most of my car trips take me through Birmingham. I never said Birmingham was the worst. I just said getting over the mountain is a bitch.

Neither of you would do well on the observation decks of the Stratosphere tower in Las Vegas - 900 feet, or the CN tower in Toronto - 1122 feet above street level. The CN tower even has a glass floor you can walk on and look down. (Those tiny yellow things down there are school busses.) Jon

The floor of the glass viewing cube is opaque until it extends from the side of the building then it becomes clear, then there is nothing between the ground 300 meters or 985 feet to the street below.
