I grew up with Congolese music. My dad loved it to the core. He was a tailor contracted to do school uniforms, so he would work through the night. From the age of 10 I would spin these records for him after the only Radio Uganda station shut for the day! Then he would tune radio Bukavu or others on medium wave and listen till day break.

Musically this is perhaps the most beautiful composition of his career. One can quarrel with its protracted lenght, and certainly with the subject matter, but the music itself floats a lovely, lazy Rhumba full of subtle twists and turns. Building on a simple guitar riff that encompasses just eleven notes. Franco arranges the supporting cast - a delicate saxophone chorus, his own authoritative bark, and the lyrical tenor of Madilu Bialu - to near perfection. The words of Lingala tumble in graceful symphony, and when Franco and Madilu join their voices in melodious call and response progression - the effect is positively thrilling. Franco never studied music I wonder how he got this right.

@@ANDAREJO I am not against the idea talent is nurtured. I'm marvelling the craftsmanship the arrangement of the song equally balanced and writable with a myriad of notes laid symetrically on a music sheet by a Great musician who never knew how to read or write music. I interviewed Franco in 1973 and attested to that. Then Madilu in 1989 on National Radio Tanzania. These guys just had a knack of doing it. How they did it only God knows. Can you please include English subtitles or excerpts of the interviews for the English speaking Franco Luambo fans, I'm a big fan and it would mean a great deal to have an understanding of the discussions involving Dalienst. I failed to locate an excerpt of the interview on the blog (if there is one). Other than that, great work on compiling these timeless classics Aboubacar.

Hi, With all due respect to Madilu (R.I.P.) with his impeccable track record (no pun intented) , I can't immortalize him in the same way as Luambo Makiambi aka Franco. Believe me, if Franco lived even a 5 years more, he would have still been the MAIN influence for Africa composers. This story-tellying, political satire, commentary, combined with good, actually excellent backing music is RARE! Even in other genres/cultures.

I disagree my friend. Madilu is smooth as butter. Franco without Madilu is like Batman without Robin.

@@diambo4life Not really. Each played a distinctive role in the band. But Franco was the nucleus and engine of the band not forgetting that he was the founder. So they are not on the same level by any standards. Madilu was primarily a singer with just a few compositions while in TP OK JAZZ. Where as Luambo was a composer, singer, guitar wizard besides being President and band leader
