It has been at least a year since we discussed foreign policy on the Friderikusz podcast, even though the world has become an extremely chaotic place. In fact, it was already chaotic in 2023, but the situation has only worsened since then. There have never been as many armed conflicts as there are today. The war noises have even returned to Europe with the nearly three-year-long Russian-Ukrainian war, in a region that had enjoyed relative peace and stability for decades. A year ago, the Middle Eastern conflict also reignited, involving Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah, the United States, and primarily Iran. Meanwhile, the European Union is showing signs of crisis as well. While the EU used to guarantee cooperation, compromise, and the decline of nationalisms, and the internal politics were dominated by liberal democracies safeguarded by norms and guarantees, nowadays, it seems that extreme forces, which are burying liberal democracy and European cooperation, are on the rise. A common demand of these far-right groups has become the restriction of both legal and illegal immigration, and in a broader sense, the dismantling or significant reshaping of the European Union. At the same time, we cannot take our eyes off the occasional alliance between China and Russia, as well as China’s neo-colonial economic ambitions in various regions of the world. One of the most important questions is who will be the next president of the United States after the November 5th election, and how that will shape the new foreign policy direction.
To address our many questions in this podcast, we are joined by Gábor Nagy, senior editor of Heti Világgazdaság (HVG) and head of the HVG Világ section.
