And after it, Sikh Riots started in India including the national capital New Delhi. In three days, approximate 3 thousands Sikhs were killed.
It was alleged that Congress leaders were provoking the riots.
Rajiv Gandhi was in West Bengal when he heard the news of the killing of her mother.
All senior leaders of Congress wanted Rajiv to be next Prime Minister of the country.
Rajiv Gandhi became PM of India.

Sikh riots drew a line between the two communities but one must always remember that it was the government who provoked the riots to take and not the common people of any community. I feel very sad how politics divide the community, and it seems an unending process. Even rajiv gandhi should not have tried to appease any particular community, leader should always take bold step for the welfare of the people and be firm on that, no matter what.

Sikhs were burnt alive, their property looted, their women raped, their hair cut, children burnt alive, gurudwaras looted and holy Granth sahib burnt. This was very thoughtful plan of Rajiv Gandhi congress party and their GUNDAS sajjan kumar, HKL Bhagat, Jagdish Tytler, Dharam Shastri and lower cadres participated in this pogrom, genocide of Sikhs. This was done pot teach them a lesson, cos two SIKHS killed indira Gandhi, the dictator and autocratic PM of India. MO Mathai rightly said about this women long back in his book, that if at any day, she becomes PM of India, she would rule in her own way and there may not be any more democratic India. Democratic institutions shall be used to prolong her rule and according to her discrimination. Attack on golden temple in June 1984 was very well planned almost two years. The time chosen for attack was Martyrdom day of Guru Arjun Dev ji, when thousands of Sikhs devotees visit the temple and were available at the time of attack. No warnings were given to them , nor they were allowed to come out. If Sant Bhindrawale and his men were the target, then they would have taken action at some other occasion. But intentions were clear, political mileage, continuing dynastic rule by this family. None of the GUNDAS who participated in this genocide, have been punished, but we're awarded cabinet berths in he union cabinet. Till date not a single family affected has got justice for the last 30 years. THIS GENOCIDE WAS WORST THAN THOSE OF AHMED SHAH ABDALI AND NADIR SHAH OF EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. SHAME ON CONGRESS GOVERNMENT!!!!!

Prof.Debasis Dash The fact is that but for the leadership and sacrifice of Indira and rajiv Punjab would have become another Kashmir. It are they who showed courage and conviction to bite the bullet to eradicate extremism and terrorism from Punjab and here ignorant fools are blaming them. Sikh riots were tragic and unfortunate but there is no proof of involvement of the then PM Rajiv in that. By that alleged statement, if it was indeed made by him, he wud have only meant that the riots were spontaneous and not planned. Riot was fully brought under control within 3 days unlike riots in some other states which went on for months.
