Nice! The saxophonist is Raphael Ravenscroft. This song was all over the airwaves in 1978. Gerry's voice is so smooth. Great choice!❤
@ostrichman3 жыл бұрын
he tried to sue Gerry claiming he didnt get any royalties for writing that solo but it was found in favour in Gerry who claimed he presented the solo to ravenscroft note for note.

The 1970s was the WORST decade in America in the past 80 years, and this song was the definitive song of the 70s. A scary, dark and depressing song for a scary, dark and depressing decade. There were definitely hundreds of great songs in the 70s, but this song wasn't one of them.

Does anyone genuinely enjoy this song? Or do people just say they like this song to hide the anxiety they feel when they hear it, or to sound tough? I can't stand hearing 5 seconds of this song because I feel extremely anxious when I hear it. The sax solo, and the entire song really including the keyboards, terrified the fuck out of me when I was 12 years old, and really this song somewhat ruined my teen years because I would hear it on the radio a lot, or it would get stuck in my head, and I would remember the fear I had the first time I heard it at age 12, etc. This song just immediately strikes fear and anxiety into me, even now at age 39. I don't know how anyone can call this a "beautiful" song.

Hello my friend! Your words described exactly what this song is trying to say. That period in time was magic for music, the best. I am going on 67 & grew up in southern California & music was the way we spoke to each other & taught each other about right & wrong. I am so glad you feel it too as we who were there then now miss the fact that all of us would have sat around together smoking some good weed and sharing this type of thing. Best to you man, good job!

To my ears, this is one of the greatest rock recordings ever. The songwriting, arrangement, music, performances--perfection! Rafferty had a tragic life marked by increasing dysfunction from alcoholism after this recording, but you already can hear the melancholy in this song. I love how this track goes big with the epic sax lines and then pulls way back for the smooth, intimate vocals and storytelling. The recording also has a great and technically demanding short guitar solo.

Thanks for posting mate - like you this song touches me. I moved to London as a young guy and the lyrics are about how soul less and lonely that big city can be (relate to that). "Give up the booze and the one night stands" - as a proud Scotsman - very proud that my countryman wrote this epic tune!
@DMCDObidon Жыл бұрын
Baker Street is just the perfect song. The way the music fades into the background so you can hear every word Gerry sings, then when the Sax kicks in between the vocals everything rises. The Guitar solo where theres been no heavy Guitar in the rest of the songs, leading in to the final Sax section. Gerry started out as a folk singer with Billy Connolly called the Humblebums. Gerry went on to form Stealers Wheel (Stuck in the Middle with you from Reservior Dogs Soundtrack) and Billy went on to be a world famous comedian/actor.

Gerry wrote this after being unable to put out any music for a few years because of legal disputes concerning the break up of his band "Stealers Wheel....He took many trips commuting between London and Scotland to try and resolve the matter, staying in London near or on Baker Street and would often visit a friend nearby, late at night just for a chat...Gerry suffered on and off with a drink problem for most of his life and eventually succumbed to it in the early 2000's......but he truly was an exceptional musician and songwriter...I hope that you react to some more of his great music.
