I had the privilege of collaborating with the world renowned, bass guitar virtuoso, Abraham Laboriel on a commissioned musical piece titled "60 to 30."
Abraham, celebrated for contributing to over 5,000 recordings and soundtracks (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Laboriel) lent his exceptional talent to this project.
The concept behind "60 to 30" was to compose a song that traverses the frequency spectrum from 60 Hz down to 30 Hz (known in science as VF / variable frequency). This musical journey provides a unique perspective on the world of frequency, demonstrating the profound impact when managed skillfully - a harmonious symphony emerges.
Delving into the significance of frequencies, every musical note corresponds to a reflective Hz. Notably, the Earth itself functions as a colossal electric circuit, enveloping and safeguarding all living things with a natural frequency pulsation of approximately 7.83 Hertz (Hz). Intriguingly, this frequency aligns with the human brain's average alpha, and it's also implicated in the migration patterns of birds and animals.
In the realm of frequency measurement, the use kilohertz (kHz) for thousands of hertz, megahertz (MHz) for millions, and gigahertz (GHz) for billions. While gigahertz is more commonly associated with technology, such as describing computer processor speed, our focus in "60 to 30" lies in exploring the musical dimension.
Although frequency is imperceptible to the naked eye, it manifests audibly with each frequency possessing its unique sound and rhythm. For instance, the notorious 60 Hz buzz that emanates when a guitar player plugs into an amplifier serves as a tangible example.
The harmony in music is intricately tied to tuning instruments to their proper frequencies. When instruments are out of tune, frequencies clash, but when attuned correctly, they seamlessly blend into a harmonious ensemble.
An illustration of this lies in the standard tuning of orchestras, often set to 440 Hz, known as A 440. The oboist typically plays this note, leading the orchestra in tuning due to the instrument's resilience to environmental conditions.
"60 to 30" invites you to experience this journey through frequencies, where the unseen becomes heard, and the rhythm of harmony unfolds. Enjoy the symphony of "60 to 30" from the soul of Abraham Laboriel.
