No man embodies the "American Dream" more than Abraham Lincoln. His vision of the unity of the United States in freedom and the abolition of slavery made him an icon. Lincoln was assassinated in Washington's Ford Theatre on Good Friday 1865 because of his visionary policies.

With a mixture of documentary film and modern docu-drama, this excerpt highlights the causes of the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, the worst crisis in American History that would divide a nation in two. It traces Lincoln's journey and what shaped him in his fight against slavery. But it was not Lincoln himself who triggered the war. Tensions were already lurking in the shadows, ready to erupt between a South that was resistant to social change and proud of its traditions and a liberal, urban and industrial North. The civil shows above all the institutional weakness of a nation that had not chosen between a state union and a federalism. When Abraham Lincoln, an opponent of slavery, was elected president of the United States, the tension between the North and the South was already at its climax. Seven southern states and eight slave states refused to recognize the election of the new governement: Secession is proclaimed and the Confederate Constitution is created with Jefferson Davis at its head. In April 1861, war was declared. The first battles, between inexperienced troops on both sides, took place in July at Bull Run.
The issue of slavery, which affected 4 million blacks, was the catalyst for the civil war, but we must not forget the social, cultural and religious differences between the North and the South.
