Welcome to my review of the NAD M10 streaming amplifier. A compact £2,199 class D amplifier with a built in DAC, streamer and Dirac Live LE room correction system. Does this fully featured unit point to the direction of hifi in the future?

It is quite refreshing to have a reviewer present finding in a straightforward fashion without trying to be dramatic or humorous. Obviously, you not only expended considerable effort testing the NAD M10, but also spent much time putting together a professional, clearly defined presentation of your findings and opinions. Your efforts are much appreciated. Best wishes, Leo

Thanks for another well done review. The M10 was out of my price range, so I bought its little brother, the Powernode 2i. I’ve been pleased with its performance and it’s been a good match with my Paradigm mid-size towers. As John Darko said, it’s Kallax-Fi. Definitely don’t let it’s small size fool you. Cheers!

Great review and good to see how technology and hi-fi are merging. You mention the user experience which is almost forgotten by a lot. I wish Cyrus put more effort into this element. If I were starting out I would give this some serious consideration. The debate about class D is quite reminiscent to valve versus transistor. It’s the sound that matters to the individual and how it partners with other components. Well done NAD.

Excellent review Tarun. I think you did very well covering many of the key features and sound attributes in 15 minutes (about the attention span of most). I wish more people would review class d amps - such as the Lyngdorf for instance. I currently listen to class a set amps and would like to purchase a nice class d unit. From what I have heard up to now I think the class d amps have come a long way. Thank you - very helpful review.

I've had a M10 for a year now. I had it demonstrated against the Naim Uniti Atom. Similar price size and features. Its always subjective but I just preferred the NAD sound. I have an odd shaped room so the flexibility Dirac would offer was an advantage. Speaker choice was more tricky: Kef LS50 for a month, too bright and hurt my ears. B&W 706 S2 were better but after 6 months still felt too bright. I bought the full range Dirac to try to tame the top end, but in the end it can't completely change a speakers characteristics. Finally I have been very happy with Spendor A1, not bright and a beautifully intelligible mid range. Dirac used is now just the automatic version it calculates, if the speakers are right you don't need to do a lot of fiddling. I use TIDAL HiFi via WiFi and that's been totally reliable. Really recommend NAD and Spendor, this compact system is great. Also the Cheltenham branch of Sevenoaks SSAV were immensely helpful with initial advice on streaming etc. and then letting me swop speakers around with no cost penalty.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 tangentially the M10 replaced my decades old Quad 44/405 combi (though recapped and better opamps since 10 years). To be frank while the M10 is a little more transparent, the difference is not shockingly big. The Quads were already good, and it shows that good amps do not differ that much, despite what consumerist magazines want to convince you of... The biggest sound upgrade in the M10 comes from Dirac. This feature was actually a major factor in me picking the M10 over a Uniti.

I am sorry to say this but, this current shape of the 21st century audio will be dated, obsolete and very possibly unusable in about 10-12 years as tech moves on spurred by business interests of corporations. They will want everybody to dish out quite a bit of money to buy new toys. That is how capitalism works: keeping the consumer eternally unsatisfied and compelling him to keep buying new products.

I’ve owned my M10 since July 2020. My mileage varies from yours. I don’t have the issues you did. This may be speaker choice. I use a large open baffle speaker designed by Decware. And I think my room is more treated than yours. I have no echo. Burnin was over 100 hours. Using the highest Qobuz level and Roon raised listening level a step or two. When playing modern audiophile vinyl I don’t hear the drop off I do on a vintage Blue Note. I love high end class D. I don’t want my system to add warmth or add anything for that matter. The M10 is good at this. One feature not mentioned ( in any review I’ve seen ) is the tiny steps the volume control takes. I’m never stuck with choosing too loud or too quiet. This helps when a recording is too bright. Your review is very fair as is your rating. I’m subscribed.

Another brilliant review, Tarun. While I can appreciate that this device certainly looks the money and does have some useful features, I'd not want it. I'll admit to some bias regarding class D amplification but more than that, I don't favor leaner-sounding gear. Certainly it's very subjective. I've not forgotten your observation that the comparisons you made with the Hegel did not produce huge differences and viewers should be careful when considering your experience. I'm sure that's true. To be honest I'd not normally be interested in this type of gear. I viewed the review because I enjoy your work and because your opinions seem to be honest. There are so many paths to great audio. This is another. It may not be for me but I can see it as an excellent solution for others. And that's what we need. Thank you for your work.

Tarun, keep these coming. I always enjoy your content. Your delivery gets better and better. I’d like to add that I use BluOS with my BlueSound Node 2i. I don’t know if there are levels of BluOS, because I noticed the BluOS App looks a lot better with this NAD device than the interface I have. My version is not versatile at all. I can’t built playlists. I have to retreat to the streaming service app (Amazon HD, Qobuz) to build my playlists. Then, I come back to BluOS to play it. I use the WiFi connection on the node 2i vs having to use AirPlay or Bluetooth. It’s kinda of klugey. Of course, this could be an iOS restriction. I can’t say.

I've a NAD T757 AVR, which I primarily use for listening to stereo (I know, don't judge me) and I love it - though super finicky to get the right sound with speaker calibration and other adjustments. The only thing that's right now spoiling my audio set up are those unsightly wires. Maybe, when the time comes for me to get the M10 or the H95, Ill get rid of all those wires. Once more, an excellent review. Tarun (hope I write his name right) always strikes the right balance between entertainment and technical accuracy. I really like his understated sense of humour. I hope he will become a 100k + reviewer like Steve Guttenberg, John Darko and Andrew Robinson. Points of improvement: better camera, better lighting and perhaps some green plants in his interior. Fundamentals are very solid but the videos could become a bit more visually pleasing. By the way, Tarun is the only reviewer who can explain technical notions in an understandable way. Maybe he could start a short series on audiophile concepts and terminology.

Hi Tarun. Class D is becoming a much more serious competitor to class A/ AB amps with good sound quality. I have an Arcam CDS 27 cd player/ streamer that I use with Qobuz. It has a good enough sound but doesn't seem to do gapless play back. This NAD looks a nice piece of kit for the money and a good space saver with its size. That blu os app is among the best in the business and the added benefit if Dirac Live software makes this a very interesting propersition. Get the matching right then it could be very rewarding. I've got a NAD M10. Had it since August 2019, first driving a pair of Dali zenzor 3's, then lately driving my KEF reference series Model two's from 1997. Notoriously hard to drive to a good degree, but the NAD does it well. The only thing missing is a bit of volume, sometimes it feels like it doesn't have 100 watts per channel. The most impressing thing to me is the depth and precision of the stereo image you get with the M10 - but you need to spend a few hours getting dirac setup correctly, preferably with a better mic (umik-1 ie).

A streaming amplifier is actually more like a 21st century receiver than an amplifier. For my taste this thing is a bit too clever for its own good. It is definitely high tech but it will be obsolete in a couple of years whilst some amplifiers that are already vintage now will continue to be relevant for the foreseeable future.
@SubTroppo
@SubTroppo 3 жыл бұрын
"Obsolete" is the word that came to my mind whilst watching the review. To my mind, a multitude of features is not a good selling point. Will it require its firmware or software to be updated? Does NAD really have to resources and will to support it long term?

Same concern here. Wondering if the CPU and RAM they use can handle speed and computation requirements of upcoming updates... Screen navigation might slow down, etc. Such amp like M10 and M33 are very tempting, but I doubt they'll age well in 10 years... Might become too pricey or limiting for companies to maintain software-wise... Just a thought.

Nice review. Spot on!I have this unit since it came out and it replaced a good bunch of electronics which all together costed more and sounded worse without being as practical as the M10 is. I paired it with the wharfedale evo 4.3 which have that good British midrange. Having said so I m considering un upgrade because of that lean midrange you mentioned. I was looking into Hegel. Do you reckon that the H120 or even more the H190 would be an upgrade sound wise or more of a “side-grade”? I bought the NAD at an extremely good price in 2019 (1100usd) so I was considering to add a power amp but you suggested that the lean character might be coming from the digital front end. Subscribed!

Great review, learned friend. Let me add one train of thoughts. The extremely refined differences you try to find with your ears and brain are fundamentally based in very fast waveform analysis and spatial clues. Some people are better at that than others and you seem of the very best category because of what genes and "phenes" (my wordplay - phenotypical expression of genes based on lifestyle and infection history and this includes brain training, aka learning) have given you. At the core of comparing music reproduction is the music, content or programme, you present the system with. You know that. Your choice of "Kind of Blue" is an excellent one from a musical point of view, in my book. Recorded in 1959 to a 3-track tape recorder. In a studio with one microphone per instrument or maybe more than one for a piano or drum kit. Looking at "personnel" on the tracks, we have Davis, Cannonball and Coltrane for brass, Chambers and Cobb for bass/drums and either Evans or Kelly on piano. Cannonball is absent in one original track. So we have 3 recording tracks and 5 or 6 "voices". We now know three things: (1) more microphones than tracks means a down mix in the control panel, (2) very likely "panoramic potmeters" got used to distribute sound between tracks, either in the first master recording or in the "mastered" stereo down mix used to cut the "mother" of all vinyl pressings, (3) microphones with each of the instruments records a high level of detail but takes acoustic front-back information away (phase differences). If the control panels, mixers, etc., had no frequency dependent wave form distortion, that would be nice (keep on dreaming). All left-right and front-back placement in the down mix was based on volume. Or, assessment of a system (or the effect of single component swap) with this musically excellent source material is limited to what audiophiles generally call "micro dynamics". I once played a recording of some classical music (an opera) and at some point noted that it sounded as if the orchestra was in a pit when the voices came across excellently. Then the notion popped up that an orchestra in an opera actually is in the orchestra pit in front of, and below, stage. Excellent spatial clues in the recording. Or a recording of an "a capella" recording of 8 singers of Gregorian chants with period correct percussive elements, in a chapel (capella :) ). All the spatial clues in the recording present, each of the 8 voices were present in the room - you could virtually stick your finger in their mouth, and complete with the spatial acoustic size of the chapel. This is not "my" music, but an example of source material that helps to have more in-depth comparisons. These spatial clues are based in phase differences first and micro-dynamics second, like the sounds in nature for which our hearing apparatus and brain evolved. The "audio" part of our brain is much faster than the "video" part, by the way. Studio recordings do not necessarily have to be this way. Memories come back, of a studio recording by a jazz combo that actually recorded spatial clues. Playing back, it sounded as if there was nothing between the right edge of the right speaker and the wall to the right of that - giving a feeling that there was a faulty component in the audio chain. Swapping components and channels did not solve it. Mentally stuck in trying to understand the phenomenon, turning pages in the booklet with the album, a photograph of the session gave the answer. The studio space had been rather small and the grand piano had been placed against the right wall. What we heard was the system's ability to reproduce precisely that: real acoustic spatial clues, rather than electronic down mixes. Analog or digital make no difference. Vacuum tube or solid state - let's say that the 1959 "Kind of Blue" analog studio vacuum tube tech was so high in fidelity that solid state needed a couple decades to get near that quality. Excellent examples of live recordings of that period are on "RCA Living Stereo". The very high speed of studio tape recorders enabled higher frequency range and more dynamic range than what ended up on vinyl in the shops. Listening to these original tapes is an incredible experience, by the way. One limitation could be in the dynamic range. A recording engineer might reduce recording volume, or raise it, to get within the optimum recording volume band for the recording medium, the musicians might play soft sections in the music louder and loud sections softer, and in the final "mastering" for the distribution medium, this may happen again. You don't want more than 50 dB dynamic range on vinyl or get complaints from buyers. So dynamic compression is still a real thing: some radio stations do that all the time, when other stations only do it in the daytime or never. This is why remastering for digital (recreating the stereo down mix from a multi track recording) is critically important. As most source material that people listen to today was artificially down mixed, it is totally relevant to use such recordings for review. My point here is that an element is missing from the review, though. Excellent review, great presentation and personally, I would add other source material in the assessment sessions. That content may have been used, and if so, got left out in the discussion.

Another clear and honest review. Hifi has certainly progressed in the past & years or so. So many features in 1 box and the sound quality isn't compromised. I guess a really interesting comparison would be the Lyngdorf tdai-1120; that's on my list for a bedroom setup.

Thank you James. I will have to check out Lyngdorf as a few have mentioned it. I wonder if I can get them in the U.K.?

i been looking at this unit for a while now, and still i have not conclusive information on important features. as its so many things in one box it have to do all of them right or i rather have seperates. what is the low watt power usage, examples: no sound power draw and 1 watt music? does the crossover have slope adjustment or is it fixed and what is the fixed slope db pr octave? does the crossover work for main speakers, subs only or both. any parametric eq options?

I'm using a PS Audio Class D Sprout 100 As my desktop AMP. only 7"X5" X 2" Delivering 100amps into 8 Ohms. Its driving a pair of Celestion F10's very nicely thank you very much. I bought it because its perfect as a desktop.

So there I was glancing through the new videos when I came across one of my favourite reviewers. But, wait, what's this? A review of an unpronounceable class D boom box! I went and made a cup of tea and when I came back, to my amazement, Tarun was still talking about it. Given it's shelf life will be shorter than an EU trade embargo, I found this mystifying, but I suppose this is what the manufacturers must do to survive these days. Once upon a time, a company called New Acoustic Dimension made a simple 20watt per channel amp that wasn't as good as the rest in it's class, it redefined the budget class for all time. Oh well, must find where I left my pipe and slippers. 😉

@@abritishaudiophile7314 I used to sell NAD, and I fondly remember getting an earful from a company rep when I didn't spell out the letters.

I suspect I am in the minority but I used to sell it back in the 80s and we always referred to it as NAD as opposed to N.A.D. 😊
