Thank you for reviewing the Rubikore 6s! I'm a very new convert to Dali, having recently auditioned a pair or Opticon 2 Mk2 stand mount speakers. I was astonished at the huge soundstage and sweet spot, but underwhelmed with their dynamics. On Crutchfield's recommendation I returned them for a pair of Oberon 9s which possessed most of the good qualities of the Opticon 2s, but with much more punch and presence. I would have probably stopped there, but I had a conversation with a gentleman who works for the US distributor for Dali. We discussed what I thought the strengths and weaknesses of both speakers and he urged me to try the Opticon 8s. I received the Opticon 8s last week, like the other Dali speakers they need at least 75 hours of breaking before the woofers and midranges come to life. I find the Opticon 8s to have nearly all of the virtues of the Opticon 2, and Oberon 9s and I expect them to be with me for many years to come.

I love Oberon, you get a big taste of Dali sound for good value. Opticon are better performers still, but I would personally save up and jump up to Rubikore over the former. I've spent good time on Rubicon, and heard Rubikore (bookshelves) today and was wholly impressed with the upgrade. Looking forward to time with Rubikore 6, which are coming soon! 😊

Very good review. I recognize a lot of the things you've said about those speakers. As you mentioned, Dali often pairs their speakers with NAD or lyngdorf amps on demos, that's also what I've listened too, and I am very impressed. I have the NAD C658 C298 combination with Oberon 7's. I've always enjoyed the warm character of this entry level hifi speaker. And in my journey, looking for a speaker upgrade I've previously stumbled upon some challenges. Before Rubikore came out, strong contenders for a speaker upgrade were Dali Rubicon 6 or the Epicon 6. I've even checked out B&W 702 S3 and the 804 D4. I've paired all of these speakers with my amp combination, and allthough all of them are fantastic speakers, none of them felt like a good fit for me. Rubicon 6: Loved the impressive control over the dynamic range of the music, but the bass lacked warmth, the punch of a bass drum, whether acoustic or electronic music, came with too much mid, and allthough the low end of the bass was clear and detailed, it just wasn't my taste when it came to balance between these layers. Epicon 6: Incredible clarity, but overall, lacking warmth. I started to question if improved clarity would always come at the price of sacrificing 'warmth' B&W 702 S3: I don't think the amps that I have are a good match with these speakers. The clarity and lack of distortion outperformed the rubicons, but, I love a broad soundstage and with the B&W"s I felt they shoot the sound straight through the middle. I no longer felt the size of the environment where the music was recorded. Rubicon and Epicon do a much better job at that. B&W 804 D4: Incredible detail, clarity, control, balance (my kind of warmth in the music), stereo imaging. In all aspects unbelieveable performance, yet, this impressive control over every single detail in the music, to my taste, appears to eliminate something from the music, the emotional or exciting aspect of the music disappears, due to the extreme analytical nature of this speaker. A bass drop after a buildup in an electronic song, the first note of an impressive guitar solo, usually these moments in music are an awe inspiring moment, but the B&W presents it with such a level of control, that those emotional peaks just flatten. Maybe I just need imperfection to some extend, to maintain joy in music. Last tuesday I went to check out the rubikore 6. This speaker, to my taste, tackles all the problems I had with the other speakers. So far, I've had the most joy listening to the Rubikore, than any other speaker. I've done a direct comparison with the epicon 6, and I just have more joy listening to the rubikore. And in the end, no matter the technical aspects, price range or objective superiority, the only thing that truly matters is if you find joy in listening to a speaker. And to me, the Rubikore feels like the speaker I'm going to experience an overwhelming amount of joy with. Unless I somehow come up with a budget for the Epikore 11, I checked those out too. I don't know how to review that other than: wow! With a massive sweetspot and a stereo image beyond imagination, they sound like a front row seat at any concert.

Rubicore 8’s running through Denafrips Iris 12 + Ares 12 and Yamaha AS2200, about 30hrs into the recommended 100hr burn in and they sound amazing, particularly the high end detail. They started off a bit analytical and busy, but have softened into silky smooth, slightly warm sounding speakers, and the bass is starting to flesh out. They have a very enveloping immersive sound. It is nice to let the Yamaha stretch its legs as it tends to blow the socks off most speakers.

I’ve had two sets of DALI speakers. The first was the Dali Concept 6, but at the time, I didn’t know much about things like soundstage or speaker placement, so I didn’t get the most out of them. I eventually moved on to the Q Acoustics 3050, which really kicked off my hi-fi journey. I also have a pair of Dali Spector 2s that I picked up for £44 used. They’re great with acoustic guitar and instrumental tracks, delivering solid bass for their size and a surprisingly open soundstage. I mostly bring them out for fun and testing when I get new gear.

Great review as usual Tarun. Got to be one of the best reviewers on YT. Whist the Rubikore is an upgrade to the Rubicon its not in the same class as the Epicon 2s you previously review. The Epicon 6 (& 8s) would be a more suitable comparison, albeit about double the price (& worth ever penny). As for what you referred to as a polite sound this is not a fault, it was part of the design objective and is intended to sound more musical without fatigue. Plenty of that kind of speakers available if that's what you want.

Great review as always, Tarun. I love your thourough, objective process. No matter what you review, I always seem to end up learning something new. I’ve had a pair of Dali Opticon 6’s for 3 years now, which are essentially the same setup as the Rubikore’s, just a step down in their lineup, and I absolutely love them. So I was surprised to hear your comments on how they were lacking in several areas compared to other speakers, since I don’t experience these shortcomings with mine. Then I heard you talk about the amplifier pairing and it made more sense as I have mine hooked up to an NAD M10. Now, I’ve not heard any of the other speakers you mentioned, so I can’t say whether or not powering the Rubikores with an NAD amp would bring them on par with the other speakers. But it does speak to how important it is when selecting separates to try out different pairings as that could be the difference that leads you to something you love. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Speaking of listening rooms, I’ve had a lot of fun swapping and changing models over the last few years and certain ones have caused real issues in my small room. I think that’s entirely down to the room and not the model of speaker. My small room has caused so many issues I felt it was necessary to change to an entirely different format which MA didn’t have. To my tastes, Dynaudio are the standout loudspeaker brand (midbass dynamics, natural engaging mids, clear but smooth tweeter). Within their present range the Evoke 10 (smaller and better controlled midbass driver than Evoke 20) and Contour 20i (no slight upper mid tilt like Confidence 20) are the stand outs.

Hi. Thanks. I enjoy your reviews 🙂 I have a pair of Dali ikon 6s, which I’ve had for 15 odd years. I’ve always really enjoyed them. I thought it was time for an upgrade so bought a pair of ex display Kef r7’s. I fully expected a huge improvement but they, when compared against each other, didn’t sound as good. It made me realise how good the ikons are and kind of fell in love with them all over again. Also made me question the notion that speakers are the most important part of the system. My streamer and amp add up to about £4000 worth of kit. I think an upgrade in amplification would bring out even more of these speakers. I kind of feel weird preferring a pair of 15 year old £900 speakers to modern £2700 speakers.

Fantastic midrange, fast and tight bottom end. They did everything right with a 1500 and a 2000 euro amp. The problem is endgame speakers all seem to be universally priced at 5000 euros. Once you heard the Rubikore, mid-priced ones sound like a waste of money. So. I’ll stick to my low priced Dynaudios.

I can't say I've owned many pieces of kit from the same manufacturer, but I do have a pair of Quad S2 for my nearfield system in the study and a pair of Quad Revela 1 for occasional use in my main system in the lounge. Needless the say, the Revela 1 sound considerably better to my ears, but bearing in mind the around 3x price differential, I think highly of both. I did have a pair of Dali Menuet SE, but I somehow never really got to connect with them and eventually part exchanged them for the Revela 1. I bought the SEs for £999 in a sale and got a £729 credit, so a reasonable deal I thought. But you know what? IMHO the best speakers I have are my homebuilt Open Baffle clones. I won't bang on about them as I've been interminably asking you to review O/B speakers for a while now...😉

I'm running a 7.2.6 Atmos setup with all Dali speakers except for the subs. Rubicon 5's for the fronts, Opticon vokal mk2 for the center, Menuet for the surrounds and rear surrounds and Alteco C-1 for the heights. Denon X6700H powering everything, except the LCRs which are powered by two XTZ Edge A2-300's. Couldn't be happier 😊 But I do wonder about Dali's power handling capabilities and how much power these speakers really need to perform at their best. Loved my Naim Supernait 2 which injected the excitement back into a slightly pipe n' slippers system I was looking for. Unfortunately stepping up to a 250DR power amp and especially 282 pre-amp made the level of detail so forensic as to be bright and fatiguing. B&W 800 series speakers with their diamond tweeters may have contributed and I ultimately moved to McIntosh amplification which offers much better synergy (although the system is now highly revealing of recordings and their differences, both good and bad). Would like to see you cover something along the lines of getting the best from your system through mains filters and isolation products. Russ Andrews?

Looks like it is time to invest in reference power amplifier ;) Testing above 3k without it might not give some speakers full justice. Especially some lowish sensitivity monitors. From my experience this is when proper audiophile journey starts. Suddenly so many variables needs to be improved. Starting from power cables or even separate AC line. Isolation from the floor is another big factor when speakers are going very low. Especially on wooden floor. When I upgraded to FS Ktema, I thought speakers are too big for the room when on spikes. Bas was slow and boomy. Putting them on Podium made by Townshend Audio, suddenly freed low frequencies. And this was not a problem with smaller SCM11 or Focal Soprano2 before.
