Addicts are extremely good at rationalizing use- threats of being jailed rarely work. The addict will convince themselves they can find a way to get away with it- and if nothing else, they'll just use and then face the consequences. They almost can't help it- consequences have to be very immediate and real to them - or they don't respond to them. Someone like this- you need to lock him up for at least 30 days- then he'll respond to the threat of jail because it's real and immediate. I was the same way- I knew I was going to go to jail if I didn't stop using, but I kept right on until they locked me up. I don't have children, but a lot of my clients do- I'm a counselor now, I've been clean over 15 years- even threats of taking ppl's kids don't work- until you do it. Then you get results- the problem is, this is traumatic on the kids. They need stability and can't be used like a game piece to checkmate an addict. Addicts know this, they know we're very hesitant to disturb a child's living situation because whatever you do needs to be at least semi-permanent- for the kid's sake. Also- I had some experience with the foster care system and local orphanages growing up- I am loath to put a child into that mess. Things have to be truly bad for me to send a case on up to social services.

The big book and heroin anonymous SAVED my life. We use the A.A big book in heroin anonymous, because why fix what ain’t broken. It’s saved the lives of millions since it was written in 1939. I keep a small big book in my bag everywhere I go. It’ll be 6 years on April 17th. I never thought I’d have any semblance of a normal life in any capacity.. if I didn’t want it, though.. I wouldn’t have even a day of sobriety.. &; I’d probably honestly.. be in a coffin right now. I’ve had drug court and that never worked. I’ve been to jail and dreamed of the day I’d get out to get high again. I almost lost my hand to an infection on my 26th birthday. You have to want to do it. Or it won’t happen. You have to want to save your life. Nothing else.. and no one else.. can do it for you. That sucks.. but thems the breaks..&; I know 23 kids in their 20’s who passed from addiction.. before they got that feeling and got to that point of wanting it and wanting to fight for their lives.. That could’ve been my story- EASILY. I just happened to get lucky. I’m sorry, but your statement is beyond ignorant. Clearly; addiction isn’t part of your story. &; I’m happy for you that it’s not. No one wants this shit. Educate yourself.

@@apatheticaesthetic. well I’m very very happy you are clean, sober and in recovery. You’re right, most people don’t make it. And you’re right that a person has to want it, more than they want anything. But I am in recovery, and for a long time, not heroin-alcohol-. That wasn’t what I meant when I wrote that. I was “talking” to him. But in reality I’m saying that he needs consequences. I didn’t want to quit as long as I could tolerate the consequences. There was a time, I’m very grateful, where I didn’t want those consequences. When I got into recovery I didn’t think it would work for me. But it has, everyday. But it’s work, like you say. A lot of commitment but every minute is worth it. Next time I will be clearer and no more snark. Again, thank you for telling me. I’m so happy you’ve got 6 years. That makes me very happy. It does work when we work it.
