I use lipo batteries in rc aircraft and they are considerably larger and will certainly cause a fire but even those would be unlikely to actually cause serious harm when they explode.

It's unlikely the exploding pager is caused by a malware attack because NiMh battery doesn't have enough power to maim or kill a person. If you search on KZbin about lithium fire, the discharge is not an explosion but just a burst of flame which at worst would cause a severe burn, but will never maim a person. The first scenario where they intercepted and sabotage the supply line is far more plausible, because you just need several grams of explosive to cause significant damage.
