Gohar became demoralized as the match went on. Apart from the contribution of said denigration to Gohar's loss, this match illustrates something important (and good) about the game of squash. Hitting hard often fails to pay off in the game of squash. Gohar hits the ball harder than any women on the pro circuit. This very often gets her a lot of points. However, the truly excellent squash player knows what to do with balls that have been hit hard (too hard too often) and knows how to handle the player who relies rather too much on power. El Sherbini is precisely that excellent squash player; she has a superior grasp of the game of squash, which is played in a room and is not tennis. Power does not win the day against an El Sherbini, it did not win the day against a Nicol David. El Sherbini beat Gohar by managing her and her observable tendency to rely on hard hitting. It must be said that it takes a very high degree of skill to be able to manage the power-oriented opponent; the reason Gohar has been world number one is that few players are experts at undoing or obviating the power used by such players. I am not saying that professional players cannot deal with a hard shot in that they cannot return it at all, they usually do at least return the ball. However, how optimal is that return? Too often it is suboptimal. Your victory is assured in the game of squash if 50% of your opponent's replies are sub-optimal. (By optimal I mean the best and perfect choice of reply, and perfectly executed.) What El Sherbini again did to Gohar (this is far from the first time it has happened) today was two things (i) She kept the rallies going with optimal replies even if any given shot was very hard. (ii) She used power herself in a selective and opportunistic manner. This latter intelligence was consistently applied only at the right moment, after the rally has progressed, and was expressed with variation in length and angle with the moment of the selective application of power. Gohar is a professional and often got strings on (say) a hard, short, flat cross shot, but that's often all she could do, the reply was of sub-optimal quality, giving El Sherbini the Thinker (forget princess) a host of options that almost no human being could cover (all of).

Good analysis Sherbini is really very good one of the best of last 30 years along with nicol david

Your analysis is good in thisparticular match. But it doesn't apply for every one of them. We have a very good top 3, and they play good in their own way, so a match can go either way with this 3.

@@fedeDGa I agree that any top player (yes, someone in that top handful of players on the planet) can ‘win the day’ against any one of the other players who play in that rarefied atmosphere of squash. My friend Neil Harvey (he coached Peter Nicol, and whom I believe himself reached number 10 in the world around about the Khan years) recalled that he could recall that there was only a handful of times when everything was working for him at the very same time, in his own play in professional competition. It is interesting to think about what is inside that bag of elements, things that all need to work if the pro is going to go all the way to championship ball. Things like his or her awareness of the location of their opponent. The sharpness of reflexes on the day and the hour - this game is won or lost in the realm of repeated decision made on the scale of two tenths of a second. The discipline to address the ball in the way that a golfer addresses the ball (except that the golfer gets to stand still). Shot patterning; my varying of pace and length (am I becoming predictable)? Shot choices, and especially my apparent shot choices when my opponent is in a pinch (remembering to use deceptions or holds). It is a reason that I am still fascinated by the game of squash after being somewhat obsessed with it for 25 years that the simple fact of being able to physically engage in a high level of sustained full court coverage (SFCC) simply does not guarantee success. I like to say that squash ability or level must be presented on a logarithmic scale. My local top A player smokes all good players that I know and play, he is almost bored when playing the other ‘excellent’ local players. That A player often cannot even get past Round 1 of a Challenger level tournament, the international opposition he encounters is not a bit better, that competition is 10 times better. The person who can win Challenger level tournaments often gets smoked/destroyed in a high level tournaments, again, the competition is not somewhat better, it is 10 times better. Fascinating.

That just goes to show how good Sobhy was playing and the gear Sherbini had to hit to beat her.

What an absolute class act Sherbini is! I'm a big fan of both of these players but with the form Gohar was in, to beat her 3-0 in the way she did takes some serious minerals. Incredible!

When your main (or only) weapon is taken away, you'll always struggle. Compounding this for gohar, is sherbinis awareness, movement and touch.

Hats off to the two greatest players on the women's side of the game. Sherbini really took Gohar to the cleaners here. In the end, the World Nr 1 looked anything but. She was forlorn and dispirited, almost waiting only to get off the court. But what we have seen again are Gohar's fundamental weaknesses. Even when she wins commandingly, she is too dimensional, relying overly on her power. The risk is that when her attritional game is cancelled out as Sherbini did here, she has little in her tool kit to fall back on or shift gear. In particular, she lacks an attacking game that is piercing, clever, confident or predictable. Okay, that is really not fair to say because of course we see Gohar going for it, including some killer volleys. But typically, her short game is tentative and loose, providing her opponent the gift of a ball hanging the air to be counter-attacked. By contrast, she for her part is very vulnerable to the attacking short game, especially when she is facing clever faints and variations. Again as we saw here, she left flatfooted and outwitted even when she may be forwards of the service box. But let's take nothing away from Sherbini. In this form, no one was going to get a shout in against her!

Gohar needs to do more that just hammer the ball against Sherbini who is just a class player with far more variation in her play.

At 1:36 you can see Gohar holding her right elbow. It seems that her constant hard hitting may have finally caught up with her. She still has some of the best racket preparation ever. Regardless, Sherbini keeps proving that she is the best, and smartest female player to have ever played this game. We are lucky to have her on video and for free. Thanks.

Agreed, with that high cross she was doing during the serve returns, she did that so much that Sherbini was just waiting for her. That shot is only as good when it is used as a surprise or with some decent amount of variety. It really just gave Sherbini more time to think and lay out her game plan.

Is gohar injured? She was holding her elbow. She had some on her wrist back in NY. El sherbini was la creme de la creme. At this point gohar should change her strategy when playing against el sherbini. But still number 1.
