As a retired officer ,1971 to 2001, minor crime ,or beat crime was bread and butter stuff, you learnt how to investigate crime with that. To be fair crime, such as criminal damage, is difficult to detect ,without cctv or witnesses , Local knowledge has all gone, due to some idiot saying staying at one station too long ,increased canteen culture .No home beats anymore, Station areas too large , direct entry Inspectors and Supermarket Superintendents all make matters worse. So will it turn around, not in my lifetime

In the past, the local home beat officer was attached to the 'm**der squad' if one occurred on his beat, road blocks were regular features and N/D E/T officers were given local warrants to execute at around 4 and 630am. If unsuccessful, the subject would soon surrender at the station under pressure from his family and neighbours. One particular Sgt had an arrangement with a local milk depot and assigned one officer (civvy coat over his uniform) to drive around in a milk float between 3 and 5am acting as spotter for the shift.

Less than 148,000 police officers to an estimated population of over 68 million....Don't need to be a rocket scientist to see what the problem is....
