I have been to Lymepark and that beautiful mansion. It is truly a treasure. When i visited i got the chance to dress up like a Lady and stroll around the house and the gardens. That was wonderful, some people even took photos of me. That has been an experience of a lifetime. 🤗

@@merbelle I so agree! Initially, with my own ignorance, I was appalled with the bare hands touching that book. Then, as I took a breath and thought, wait, this is a history channel! These are restoration EXPERTS! These people KNOW what they are doing. Perhaps off camera, he had just washed and dried his hands. I also got a bit twitchy with the vacuum on that tapestry. Another breath. Yes, these are the REAL experts. Not me with my 20th/21st century ideas of housekeeping! What a wonderful show! I will be back for many, many more!

Once a place like Clandon house has been so burned out, isn't it questionable whether the restoration is really historic at all? The National Trust must have an enormous fund to dedicate to this kind of work but rebuilding burn outs isn't the same as restoring mostly intact antiques and period rooms. It gobbles up a fortune only to get a recreation. Is the National Trust able to raid the endowments of other trust properties? But you can't ask ghosts of dead owners their opinion on how or where the endowments are spent.. Fires have such freakish results sometimes. Isn't it so strange that wall paper or fabric hangings can actually still cling to otherwise gutted rooms? How does it do that when it was hanging in a furnace for a few hours? Too bad about loosing the state bed.

I met a conservator a couple of years ago, she told me one can touch paper (without fungus and grim) with freshly cleaned hands, but to never touch metal with bare hands because it gets damaged.

Gloves are not necessary if you have washed your hands. In fact, lacking tactile feedback, they can snag on pages and cause tears. I am an antiquarian bookseller of over 40 years standing, and I don-#t even own a pair of gloves.

The oils on our hands actually help preserve the parchment. Gloves were actually damaging the print and hand coloring by wearing them off like sand paper.

Also bare fingers have been fine motor control for turning the pages. Gloved hands require a firmer grasp of the pages which is much more damaging. (That said, best practice is different for different types of artifact and materials)

probably because at this age children were not yet expected to adapt to strict gender roles. Cutting a boy's hair and dressing him in male clothing symbolised a transition to a stage of life when he was supposed to learn how to be a man. Just like for teenage girls pinning their hair up signified maturity and readiness to enter society and marry. On a purely practical level: dresses probably made it more convenient for things like changing nappies etc. than trousers.
