Tony Robinson is one amazing story teller, brilliant documentary

I learnt most of this in school. But it takes Tony Robinson to make it interesting! Some of my ancestors arrived in Wellington (or technically, Petone) in 1840 on the Bengal Merchant

"The rich old guy who built what he said was an earthquake proof house had it fall on him, squish him and then he DIED! Welcome to Wellington." I can't lie. That was a banger of an opening.

I teared up when Sir Peter brought out the Blackadder costume. Recognised the sleeve instantly. Amazing.

That intro lmao! A Wellingtonian at heart living on the other side of the world now... I remember earthquakes being such a common thing that the only time I panicked was when my son was on the loo at the back of the house (an old colonial cottage) which was on a big drop behind, and a strong one hit. Worried that he was gonna fall off the edge along with the bathroom! Otherwise shakes were a normal thing, growing up in Taupo eruptions too, is weird to now live somewhere without these things! Edit; living in Hamburg, I get a good reminder of the weather but it isn't quite the same as Windy Wellington with the sideways rain! 😂

Kiwi here. I was taught that the first European woman to arrive on these shores (aside from Dutch shipwrecks from the past etc) was a convict who stole a scarf and was sent to New Zealand as part of the punishment, lol. Never heard of this particular convict though - looking forward to learning about him!

Hearing you refer so casually to being from NZ is so fascinating to me, I've only read about it and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and live in Texas now, in used to this giant continent and just driving everywhere. My niece traveled the world a few times and loved Norway and Scotland and New Zealand the best, she was just drawn to the people and scenery....I've never been anywhere!
