Just like other fellow Turkish people here, I'm also here to share that Sezen Aksu writes songs and sings in a way that crystallises even the most nuanced, subtle, complex, beautiful and bitter-sweet human experiences into a shared, collective musical experience. I am so eternally grateful for her contributions to Turkish music (things went downhill after she and the talented artists she introduced us to passed their productivity prime and left the mainstream to pretty cheap, bad music) but I am also eternally grateful to her for giving the impact of her music in my life. The nostalgia, the melancholy, is delicious.

The strongest side of Sezen's music is the lyrics. They are so powerful in most of her songs. Poems are lost in translation though. Like this one. The poet used "smile" in three different meanings simultaneously. 1) Smile, everything's gonna be alright. 2) Smile, that's the only way to relieve this 3) Smile if you can, to this pathetic, miserable situation you're in, you can't! So, it confuses you. He encourages and gives hope while telling you it's hopeless. You want to try, to fight and you accept it won't work simultaneously. That's why we cry hearing this song, IMO.
@katjawege68865 күн бұрын
@kozatas I agree with you. Poems and lyrics are often lost in translation. This happens to German lyrics as well, there are so many Phrases you just cannot translate properly. And I think Turkish songtextes are even more lyrical. But really good music touches your heart even though you don't understand the words. Music and the way somebody sings, like Sezen, is an international language 👍

This song is from a poem by Kemal Burkay, which advocates for hope despite everything. The poet wrote this song in a deprived city(in Eastern Anatolia) where even a new film coming to the town cinema makes the climate warmer and pleasant(Mediterranean weather) and makes him hopeful. Not even having a cat of his own, just smile, it goes on to say. Just imagine as if the whole town has become at odds with you, do not stop smiling.

I love the fact that how you recognize and appreciate the good quality voice and excellent work. I’m 55, Sezen Aksu was and still is the greatest poet, vocalist (singer) artist of our time. We know we love Sezen Aksu, but if you ask any great Turkish musicians to explain this song second by second in details, I don’t think they could do as much of a justice as you did for this song and the artist. You explain to me why I love Sezen Aksu so much without growing in the culture, without knowing the language and without understanding the full dimensions of the lyrics (because of meaning loss during the process of translation). And you are right, that note and sound has a lot to do with language but also the color, quality and strength of Sezen Aksu’s voice. Thank you for doing this, thank you for appreciating Sezen Aksu as much as we do. Love, good luck!❤🙏🏻🧿

the lyrics of this song derive their power from the people of anatolia who know how to be happy even with small things, nature and true love. the fascinating part of the song is not sezen aksu's vocal performance, but her unique voice's ability to emotionally convey the pain specific to these lands to the listener. these lands are ancient lands where great wars and great suffering have taken place. that's why this pain and plea is felt in many of our songs. Aysel Gürel, who wrote the lyrics of this song, should also be congratulated.

Sezen Aksu is one of Turkey's most beloved and influential singers, songwriters, and composers. Often called the "Queen of Turkish Pop," she's been active since the 1970s and has helped shape modern Turkish music, blending pop, folk, and classical elements into a unique style. Her songs aren't just catchy-they’re deeply poetic, often dealing with themes like love, loss, and life’s complexities, which resonate across generations.

I'm %100 agree with you about her. What an unforgivable mistake she did. That was a big disappointment and still is. Some mistakes cause enormous bad things and that was one of them. Of course she is a good singer, composer but she has many badly caracteristics.Turkish community decided to not see it or tolerate it. During the years, she dominate the music industry and even the media. She use the people's love to cover all of it. Don't get me wrong, I still think she is one of the diva of Turkish music, still like to listen her songs. But that does not change that the reality, her political view is rubbish.

Amazing lyrics, fantastic vocal performance and, the venue. Ephesus amphitheater dates back to 300 BC and the ancient city which you can still visit most part of it dates back to 550 BC. That region was inhabited starting from 6000 BC!!!!!!!! I always had an issue(and still) with Turkish modern music. Fantastic vocal performances, deep lyrics but instrumentality it is weak. I often recall it as poems with some background "tunes". A line from this song became a part of Turkish slang also. "I even don't have a cat, do you understand me? How can I smile?" When we wanted to say that we feel blue, we used to say "I don't even have a cat!".

Gülümse is a song from Sezen Aksu’s '91 album of the same name, which became a cultural milestone in Turkey, selling over 3.5 million copies and standing as one of the best-selling albums in Turkish music history. The lyrics are originally a poem by Turkish/Kurdish poet Kemal Burkay, beautifully crafted with rich metaphors and symbolism. As the lyrics are so rich in metaphor and symbolism, translating them without losing their essence is extremely challenging. I would like to translate them for you but it is kind of impossible for me, not because I don't understand the lyrics but because my English skills won't be sufficient tell it in English as rich as it is in Turkish. At its core tho, Gülümse (which translates to "Smile" in English. The verb is Gulumsemek and Gulumse is the imperative conjugation of it) is a deeply melancholic yet hopeful piece. The song encourages finding the strength to smile and look for the bright side, even in the face of personal and collective struggles. It captures the delicate balance of someone trying to uplift a loved one while grappling with their own difficulties, a bittersweet act of resilience and solidarity. The poetic lyrics make extensive use of metaphor and imagery, (like "dreams of forests", "the Mediterranean climate", and "fleeting moments of joy") that reflect both the individual’s yearning for hope and a broader emotional connection to Turkish culture. Its melody and message resonate universally but also carry the unique soul of a region familiar with hardship and perseverance. Gülümse is not just a song; it’s a timeless reminder to find light in darkness and to keep going, no matter how heavy the burdens may feel. Oh side note: As I have mentioned above, lyrics from a Kurdish/Turkish poet's poem. The song's arrangements are made by two Armenian/Turkish musicians, Onno Tunc and Arto Tuncboyaciyan. It is a great example of how colorful is Anatolian cultural heritage.

thanks for listening Sezen Aksu, this is a very small example from her representing maybe 1% of her music, she is a musical genius who has changed the Turkish music, effected a generation, after she stop producing very actively, we are in a decline in music, she is not from this world. Tarkan, Sertap who you already listened are her discoveries and there are many more. My favorite songs from her are "Haydi gel benimle ol", "bu gece", "deger mi?"

Seing Sezen performing live was always quite an experience. Thankfully i have had this opportunity a couple of times. Unfortunately she doesn’t perform anymore. Hats off to her vocalist, Mr. Cihan Okan as well. I must also add that two of these concert series were performed at Ephesus and Aspendos theaters, which are around 2000 years old, each. Thank you for this wonderful review.

Its very interesting to watch a reactor who doesn't understand the lyrics like I do but still feel the emotions. please make more reactions to her and her students like Sertap Erener, Levent Yüksel, Aşkın Nur Yengi. You can get similar feelings from these artists as well.

[Verse 1] Smile, smile to clear those clouds Otherwise how could I blossom? Smile A film may come to the town A beautiful forest could be on the frame The climate could change, becomes Mediterranean Smile [Chorus] Suppose that I feel hungry, I don't talk to my mom Whole city don't talk to me I don't even have a cat, do you feel me? Smile [Post-Chorus] A film may come to the town A beautiful forest could be on the frame The climate could change, becomes Mediterranean Smile [Instrumental & Back Vocals] [Verse 2] Smile, smile to clear those clouds Otherwise how could I blossom? Smile A film may come to the town I had reeds, and rivers I had pebbles But you're different, do you understand? You're different I had reeds, and rivers I had pebbles But you're different, do you understand? You're different

14:08 Because Turkish pronunciations of ''ni'' and ''ri'' sound very similar, and even if you are a native Turkish speaker sound same. So here Sezen says ''yeni-le-ni-rim'' (I will be renewed) and puts almost the same melody on these two syllable ''ni'' and ''rim''.. Therefore that is why (inevitably) you think that you hear the very same syllable twice :) But, congratulations that is a solid proof that even you do not know anything about Turkish, you have great ears and got the exact felling that we, native speakers had. And thank you so much for this video.

Gülümse, hadi gülümse Bulutlar gitsin Yoksa ben nasıl yenilenirim? Hadi gülümse Belki şehre bir film gelir Bir güzel orman olur yazılarda İklim değişir, Akdeniz olur Gülümse Belki şehre bir film gelir Bir güzel orman olur yazılarda İklim değişir, Akdeniz olur Gülümse Tut ki karnım acıktı, anneme küstüm Tüm şehir bana küstü Bir kedim bile yok, anlıyor musun? Hadi gülümse Sazlarım vardı Irmaklarım vardı Çakıl taşlarım vardı benim Ama sen başkasın, anlıyor musun? Başkasın ********************************************************** Smile, come on, smile Let the clouds go away Or else how can I be renewed? Hi, Bethany. Here is the native Turkish speaker. I tried to translate the lyrics too. I hope I didn't mess it up too much. As you may appreciate, to reflect the same emotions is really hard in translations :) Gülümse ( Smile ) Smile, Come on smile to clear the clouds Otherwise, how can I refresh? Come on smile Maybe a movie comes to the town and there is a beautiful forest in the subtitles Climate change becomes Mediterranean Smile Suppose I am hungry, angry with my mother The whole town is angry with me I don't even have a cat, do you understand? Come on smile Maybe a movie comes to the town and there is a beautiful forest in it Climate change becomes Mediterranean Smile Smile, Come on smile to clear the clouds Otherwise, how can I refresh? Come on smile I had reeds, I had rivers Pebbles, I had But you are different, do you understand Different Suppose I am hungry, angry with my mother The whole town is angry with me I don't even have a cat, do you understand? Come on smile

It is one of the classic and still listened to songs that Sezen Aksu released in 1991 when she was 37. However, I cannot understand how it would be healthy to ask you to comment on this with a live concert recording when Sezen is over 60 years old and has lost much of her breath and vocal power. Because this performance is the kind of performance that can only be enjoyed by Turks who know the history of the song and the artist. Similar examples have occurred before. I think there is a serious problem with Turkish song requests on this channel. I think that the purpose of the channel is not well understood by the viewers and that emotionally intense songs are recommended instead of songs that are successful in terms of musical quality or technique.

Just about time. Sezen Aksu is a great singer but more importantly she's even a bigger song writer/composer. There are hundreds maybe thousands of songs that she has given to other great artists. She always works with the best musicians, the ones you see in the video are top notch musicians if not the best ones in Turkey. Every single note comes to your ear with quality, that's what makes her concerts special
