Sorry when you say 3 is a unit in z5 becasue 3 times 2 is 1 in mod 5. Where did the 2 come from I'm really confused now. Many thanks, the rest of the vidoe was lovely

You are looking for an element in the ring that when you multiply your given number the result is 1, in Z5 there are very few elements you can find it out by trying, for bigger Zn's it might not be as easy, there will be probably linear diophantine equations, or it might not be a Zn, it could be any Ring.

If 2 is to be proven irreducible, don't you need to examine whether there's a number (a+b*root(-5)) | 2, rather than 2 | (a+b*root(-5))?

You're correct. I'd have to go back and consider it again, but I think I just wrote the divisibility the wrong way, and what I'm saying still holds.
