Shooting abstract is a great way of teaching yourself how to find photographs where others doesn't, doing it for almost an entire summer made me a lot more aware of what goes on around me. And it's superfun to!

I learned that my idea of abstract photography is quite different. I am not saying that if I got a capture which was "enhanced" by having kicked the tripod by accident, is a technique to incorporate, but some of my most unique and bizarre compositions were unplanned, but beautiful...Thanks for sharing!! I do enjoy capturing something quite ordinary in a manner which makes the observer wonder what it is. Also, I do enjoy the dynamics of what slow shutter affords in texture and perception in referencing time.

A fun project to stimulate the mind to see opportunities. I was really captured by some of the shots as I thought they embraced the whole concept of abstract. Some of them(#9 & 10) just struck me as being shots taken by mistake :-) Lighting is key to add the dramatic element to the abstraction in addition to bringing out the magic is some of the textures(#1 & 2). Thank you I really enjoyed the 'walk along'

You have a very narrow understanding of "abstract" ... that it has to be an image of something "totally unrecognizable". The term "abstract" is broader than that, and there are other things that can be "abstracted" apart from the outer appearance of an object or subject.

 @ViewfinderMastery Tone never comes across very well in written form, especially online. You are mistaking efficiency with rudeness. A point made briefly, and in a "matter of fact" way - perhaps even a tad curtly - does not automatically suggest rudeness was intended. That said, I am actually somewhat disappointed and frustrated with the way most photographers seem to deal with this issue. Many of them seem to have the same kind of narrow perspective on abstract photography/art. This wouldn't be a problem by itself, except that, in addition, too many insist on patrolling the boundaries and gatekeeping when it comes to what counts as "abstract" work. I've had to explain this point too many times now, simply because I am told over and over again that I shouldn't call this or that piece of my work “abstract” because it still has some recognizable/representational elements in it. It's reached a point where I just ask people to read the dictionary definition of "abstract", and leave it at that. Of course, not all photographer react this way ... just the ones who are very eager to divvy up photography/art into distinct categories, to dispense advice to others, and to take a generally officious attitude on these sorts of matters. I watched your video in the hope that I'd get some broader perspective, perhaps so I can refer others to your discussion, and so on. Unfortunately, you repeat the same mantra about what "abstract" photography is or should be. So, yes, now that I think about it ... I guess you could say I found it frustrating that yet another photographer who takes it upon themselves to teach others about photography would not take a few moments to think a bit more in depth about the issue. But that's not the same as rudeness.

@@AHM-to6gs Thanks for clarifying, but I would agree that you do sound frustrated and I would add that there's no need to take it out on us. We are not "gate keepers" (to borrow your term) in any way whatsoever. The point of this video was just to "share" and give newcomers an idea how to get started, take action and get creative. For the experienced abstract photographer - there are better sources of information than free videos on KZbin. To really dig into the genre, I suggest exploring some well established photography authors, like Michael Freeman, John Humphrey, Mark Hunter, Paul White, etc. KZbin is no substitute for a University of course. It's a mistake to expect that you'll find a perfect (free) video lesson every time you search. Especially as the information that you seek becomes more niche and more nuanced. That's my $0.02. Good luck!

@@ViewfinderMastery Since you feel apporpriate to educate others not only about photography (introductory level or not), AND to dispense life advice ... heres' a bit of advice in turn: you are severely underestimating your audience. Why not discuss the more nuanced issues, and even mention one or two of those names?? What's stopping you? Why shouldn't an online video contain at least some university level information? What's stopping you? ... Instead of elevating people, you're regurtiating already established, narrow points of view. ... I don't make videos purporting to educate people - you do. So why not do it right? There are a few select KZbinrs who actually do it the right way, but there are too few of them. The rest take the easy way.

Abstract Photography? Absrtact does not exist so it can not be photographed. It exists only in the mind of the artist. Call it graphical or whatever, but abstract it is not.
@ViewfinderMastery
@ViewfinderMastery Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking a moment to comment. I beg to differ with your statement though and I think many other photographers (who enjoy abstract images) would object as well. Perhaps you don't find our example images convincing, but that certainly doesn't mean that abstract photography "doesn’t exist". 🙄
@lensman5762

@@ViewfinderMastery I have no objection to photographers enjoying the result of their endeavours, but to call it ' abstract ' is just incorrect. Here is the definition of abstract from Cambridge University dictionary " the situation in which a subject is very general and not based on real situations ". In simple terms an object which has a physical form can only exist in abstraction in the mind of the artist. You may use CGI to create an image out of an abstraction, but photography it is not. If by ' abstraction ' you mean to represent an object outside of its physical qualities, then that is another thiing but to call it abstract photography, is just incorrect. Enjoyed the photographs, though. Have a great day.

@@lensman5762 Well, we can agree to disagree (and there's nothing wrong with that). What I hear you saying is that "there's no such thing as abstract photography" which I still disagree with. Nevertheless, thanks for commenting and have a nice day yourself.

@@tomclarke5369 Such an irrelevant description, on your part of course. A painting can be abstract, a piece of music could even be abstract, but never a photograph, unless you have the ability to photograph what happens in your mind.
