Abstract thinking is a tool to understand one element or one cause effect relationship in a system. We build models to understand reality. The more complex and accurate our mental model, the better it might represent reality. System thinking helps to manage complexity. Analytic approach is the opposite - you want to focus on one or a few elements or a cause effect relationship so you ignore everything else. You abstract your model to the minimum so you can focus. You can abstract into a category or group or go farther and abstract to a concrete individual element, cause effect relationship or interaction. Abstract and system thinking are both useful tools and better to use both.

Get a lot of real life, specific experiences in a domain and then you will automatically see patterns and similarities. And you can also consciously look for these patterns and similarities.

Thank you for your insight explanations! Mr Zoltan, I am curious how to enhance our abstract thinking and recall/representation of concepts in our mind. I seem to have trouble recalling something I could understand while reading fast. Do we mostly rely on 'words' for representation and recall when using such abstract concepts as nationalism, emancipated human existence, or Judeo-Christian tradition? Should we try to turn the concepts into imagery and certain impressions? What frame of mind should we have/possess for more effective representation and recall of an abstract concept? Thank you :)

Byunggyu & Thinkers, Hi. When you learn complex concepts like those in medicine, law, social and natural sciences etc. it may takes years to fully grasp their meanings. Of course at any time you have some understanding and you may even believe that you totally understand a concept until you learn more and realize that it is more complex than you thought. Sometimes experience, other times experimentation can deepen your understanding it. And it is also useful to study related domains to comprehend the deep meaning. You can learn the the words "systems thinking" in a seconds but takes years to understand it deeply and relate it to various aspects of life. In this video I talk about that topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLJko2lra2IesU

I do not know of any books about abstract thinking because I was not looking for them. There are lots of videos, websites and probably books, too about systems thinking. I do not read books. Systems thinking is itself abstract.
